Sunset concert in San Juan

A concert to benefit the Orquesta Filarmónica Infantil de la Ribera de Chapala (Lake Chapala Youth Philharmonic Orchestra-LYPO) is scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, 5:30 p.m., at La Paz 17 in San Juan Cosalá.

The sunset event will be set in a lovely lakefront garden where the audience will be invited to sip wine while enjoying the debut performance of the LYPO choir and classical music by Ensemble Axixic.  Voluntary contributions will be collected at the door.

Argentine voices at city hall

Vocal Consonante, an award-winning chorus from Buenos Aires, Argentina will appear in concert Saturday, April 12, 7 p.m., in the lobby at Chapala City Hall. Noted for its varied repertoire of Argentine folk songs, traditional Latin American tunes and modern compositions, the group of 21 vocalists booked a stop at lakeside as part of its current performance tour in Mexico. THe event is open to the public free of charge.

Lake Chapala’s Big Screen Cameo

“Gravity,” the space drama directed by Mexico’s famed filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón which captured seven Oscars trophies, was back for a return run at the MovieSpace Theatre at Centro Laguna. Keen-eyed viewers were able to spot a quick look at Lake Chapala popping up in the backdrop about a minute and a half into the film. During the opening space walk sequence an inverted view of Mexico’s Pacific coast gradually appears on left side of the screen, with the dark shape of the lake becoming clearly visible as the extended single shot pans inland.

Sunday Movie

“Fair Game,” primarily a condemnation of the George W. Bush administration’s rush to war in Iraq, is the April 6 selection in the Sunday Afternoon at the Movies series sponsored by the Lake Chapala Chapter of Democrats Abroad Mexico.

The film, filled with political intrigue and personal tragedy, is based on the memoirs of Valerie Plame and her husband, Joseph Wilson. It tells the story of Wilson’s role in debunking administration claims that Iraq purchased material needed to make an atomic bomb and includes the story of how Plame was punished for her husband’s actions.

CIA agent Plame’s undercover effectiveness was destroyed and her contacts exposed to danger when the information was leaked.

Showtime is 1:30 p.m. at Cinemas Del Lago, Bugambilias Plaza, Ajijic. Tickets are 50 pesos at the box office. The public is welcome.

Proceeds are used to help fund the sponsoring organization’s non-partisan voter registration and voter assistance program for U.S. expats living at lakeside.

Quilters

Lakeside quilters made a small quilt in honor of Rosy Garnica of Zacatecas, one of the founders of the Expo Patchwork and Quilting show, who passed away from cancer on February 24.

The quilt was displayed at the Expo Patchwork just three weeks later and  raffled off at the end of the show to raise money for Fundacion Toca, which provides services for cancer patients and their families.

Says Gerri Tredway: “It didn’t give us much time, but the response that we got provided 42 blocks, from here and from her friends in Guadalajara, so the quilt grew.  Also growing were the funds collected here at Lakeside and in Guadalajara for the raffle tickets.  We sold more tickets at the show and on March 22 we presented the foundation with 10,600 pesos.  The director was so pleased to accept it and she pulled the winning ticket. We took the quilt back from Mexico City to Lakeside because the winner was one of our own – Joanne Gordon –  at whose home we had assembled the quilt.  Joanne’s husband, Glen, had passed away from cancer the previous month. Karma?”

Also at the Expo, Kathy Sterndahl, a part-time resident of Lakeside, won a sewing machine as her prize when her quilt was chosen as the judge’s favorite.  The judge was Pam Holland, an internationally known quilter, teacher and author from Australia.

Three Lakeside residents, Christy Wiseman, Gerri Tredway and Joyce Osborn, wore their quilted garments in the fashion show portion of Expo Patchwork. Also in the photo is Pam Holland.
