Sleeping Beauty

After last year’s success, Joven Ballet de Jalisco, Guadalajara’s professional resident ballet company, will recreate its spectacular outdoor production of the classic fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty” to the beautiful music of Tchaikovsky in the majestic central patio of the Cabañas Institute.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

The orchestra performs works by the three finalists in the Jalisco Orchestral Compositions Prize, along with Igor Stravinsky’s “Firebird.” Miguel Salmon del Real (above) is the guest conductor. At 37, he is the youngest person to have been named director of the Orquesta Sinfonica de Michoacan.

Tuesday recitals

The Degollado Theater opens its doors each Tuesday for the free classical music series Martes de Musica y Opera. No tickets are sold nor is there numbered seating. Just turn up before the performance and grab a seat. The quality is always high, and the theater will often fill up. 

April 21: Recital by Hugo Acosta (guitar) and Cuauhtemoc Garcia (flute) – pictured above – highlights the works of some lesser known composers, including Jaques Casterede, Roland Dyens, Agustin Barrios, Antonio Gomezanda, Apolonio Moreno.

April 28: Six-member Hortus Musicus performs arias and sonatas by Bach and Händel, as well as Henry Purcell, William Williams, Johann Jochim Quantz. They will also interpret the anonymous English folk song “Greensleves.”

Thursdays at the Palace

Instead of politicians arguing, see free recitals in the Guadalajara city hall’s council chamber. April 23: Guadalajara Municipal Choir. April 30: Symphony Band of the Universidad de Guadalajara.

Orquesta Sinfonica de Zapopan

Zapopan’s up-and-coming symphony orchestra, directed by former JPO maestro Guiilermo Salvador, presents another performance in the municipality’s fine city hall building.

Cabaret

The accomplished student performers from the Tec de Monterrey University are sure to give their all in a performance of the classic musical set in pre-World War II Berlin.

Helen Sung quartet

Acclaimed U.S. jazz pianist/singer and accompanying band  in concert, as part of a four-gig swing through central Mexico.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra 

Olivier Chauzu is the guest pianist, interpreting Vincent D’Indy’s Symphonie sur un Chant montagnard français op.25. Also Ravel’s “Daphnis and Chloe.”  The concert features the Jalisco State Choir, directed by Sergio Hernandez.

Joven Ballet 

To celebrate International Dance Day,  the Joven Ballet de Jalisco salutes Manhattan with “Who Cares?” set to George Gershwin’s best loved songs and choreographed by New York City Ballet’s founder, G. Balanchine.   Also, the company’s acclaimed “Scheherazade,” to Rimsky Korsakov’s dazzling music choreographed by award winning Canadian-based creator Mark Godden.

Live from the Met

Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci. Season finale from the New York Met sees opera’s most enduring tragic double bill return in an evocative new production from Sir David McVicar, who sets the action across two time periods but in the same Sicilian village. Marcelo Alvarez (above) rises to the challenge of playing the dual tenor roles of Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana and Canio in Pagliacci.

MAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL  British modern dance group inspired by classical South Asian and contemporary dance.  The company will present “Inked, Murmur,” the personal narrative of the troupe’s founder, Aakash Odedra, whose dyslexia at a young age threatened the development of his talent for dance.

Rock of Ages

A professional Mexico City production of the musical built around classic rock hits from the 1980s, especially from the famous glam metal bands of the decade. The show ran for 2,328 performances until January of this year, becoming the 27th-longest running show in Broadway history.
