Tuesday recitals

The Degollado Theater opens its doors each Tuesday for the free classical music series Martes de Musica y Opera. No tickets are sold nor is there numbered seating. Just turn up before the performance and grab a seat. The quality is always high, and the theater will often fill up.

Swan Lake

The world’s first production of the ballet “Swan Lake” accompanied by 3D animated graphics is presented by the Talarium et Lux Theatre of Russian Ballet.

Joaquim Sabina

Acclaimed Spanish singer, songwriter and poet, now aged 66, swings through Guadalajara as part of his “500 noches para una crisis” tour.

Thursdays at the Palace

Instead of politicians arguing, see free recitals in the Guadalajara city hall’s council chamber.

Rock of Ages

A professional Mexico City production of the musical built around classic rock hits from the 1980s, especially from the famous glam metal bands of the decade. The show ran for 2,328 performances until January of this year, becoming the 27th-longest running show in Broadway history.

Cri Cri special

The Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra plays the much-loved children’s compositions written by Francisco Gabilondo Soler (Cri Cri). Also featuring two sopranos, two tenors, a baritone and a mezzo-soprano.

Finzi Pasca

Italian acrobatic theatrical company formed in 2011 that develops artistic projects which broaden the “Theatre of the Caress” spectrum, a theatrical technique based on the invisible gesture and the state of lightness. In its Guadalajara debut, called La Verità, Finzi Pasca will offer a homage to surrealist painter Salvador Dali.

Akram Khan Company

MAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL  The 14-year-old Akram Khan Company, one of the foremost innovative dance outfits in the United Kingdom, present the show “Kaash.” A milestone in this company’s trajectory was the creation of a section of the London Olympic Games opening ceremony in 2012.   Kaash (the Hindi word for “if only”) continues Khan’s quest to “build bridges between the worlds of contemporary dance and Indian classical dance.”

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

MAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL  The festival closes May 31 with a performance by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra of Sir William Walton’s score from the 1944 Oscar-winning movie “Henry V” (starring Laurence Olivier), conducted by Garry Walker, the director of the Edinburgh Youth Orchestra. Narration is by Mario Ivan Martinez.
