Feted folk dance troupe ready for season after European triumph

Fresh from two well-received performances in Ireland and Wales, the celebrated Ballet Folclorico de la Universidad de Guadalajara returns for its annual summer/fall season at the regal Degollado Theater on Sunday, July 26.

The season will comprise 13 consecutive Sunday shows, running though October 11.

The Ticketmaster website has online booking now available through the September 20 show, which, as well as the one on September 13, will start at 6 p.m.  The first eight shows in the season are all programmed for 10 a.m.  The schedule for September 27 and October 4 and 11 has yet to be released.

Tickets may also be purchased at the Degollado box office. Prices are from 80 to 350 pesos.

This troupe’s repertoire takes in dances from the states of Veracruz, Michoacan, Guerrero and, of course, Jalisco, with its breathtaking “La Negra,” “La Culebra” and “Jarabe Tapatio” finales.

Founded more than 50 years ago, the UdG Ballet Folklorico is renowned throughout the world and comprises 30 dancers and 25 singers and musicians.   Competition for places is fierce. Many of the dancers begins their careers in the university’s children’s troupe at the tender age of seven or eight.

This week the troupe returned from a tour of Europe, where they performed in Dublin, Ireland and Cardiff, Wales.

The performance in Dublin was part of festivities commemorating 40 years of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Ireland. The show in Cardiff was scheduled in the extensive program for the Dual Year of Mexico-United Kingdom.
