The free classical music series Martes de Musica y Opera continues through October at the Teatro Alarife Martin Casillas. No tickets are sold, just turn up. Mexican-American singer and humanitarian presents her latest studio work: “Balas y Chocolate,” a homage to the Mexican festival of Day of the Dead.
Born and raised in Oaxaca, Downs’ career has been is influenced by musical legends such as Chavela Vargas, Mercedes Sosa and Lucha Villa. Performing her own compositions, as well as traditional and popular Mexican music, she incorporates indigenous Mexican influences into her performances, often singing in native languages and using authentic costumes.
