Opals from Magdalena

A month-long exhibit showcasing amazing opals extracted and crafted from the Jalisco town of Magdalena has opened at the Museo de las Artes Populares (Folk Art Museum) in downtown Guadalajara.

Hundreds of people work in Magdalena’s opal mining zone, considered the most important in all of Mexico. The colorful specimens mined here are highly appreciated by both collectors and jewelers. This is a great opportunity to see some of the best examples of opal craftsmanship under one roof.

Museo de las Artes Populares, San Felipe 211, Guadalajara Centro. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. (4 p.m. on Sundays). Closed Mondays. Free.
