Organ Festival

The Domingo Lobato Association organ festival, featuring some of Mexico’s most accomplished organists, continues at various Guadalajara churches.

Flamenco

The Compañía de Danza Pilar Villasante presents “La Vida Breve,” a choreographed adaptation featuring flamenco dance from the famed opera by Manuel de Falla.

Folk Dance

Aficionados of traditional folk dance will have multiple opportunities to enjoy a broad selection of colorful and emotional dances performed by the Ballet México Folklórico each Sunday in January and February.

Contemporary Sounds

Popular contemporary music sessions continue each Monday with the Tom Kessler Organ Trio on February 8,  Mexitano Soundsystem on February 15, the band Afrodisaicos with lively merengue, reggae, funk, raggamuffin and cumbia on February 22, and indie group Technicolor Fabrics on Febraury 29.

Live from the Met

The New York Met live simulcasts continue with Puccini’s “Turandot.” Nina Stemme takes on the title role of the proud princess of ancient China, whose riddles doom every suitor who seeks her hand, opposite Marco Berti as Calàf, the brave prince who sings “Nessun dorma” and wins her love.

Javier Camarena & the JPO

Famed Mexican operatic tenor Javier Camarena with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra headlines the opening of Guadalajara’s newest performing arts space, the Palacio de la Cultura y la Comunicación (Palcco). Born in Xalapa, Camarena made his debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera in October 2011 in “Il Barbiere di Siviglia,” garnering rave reviews.  He became only the third singer in the history of the Metropolitan Opera to perform an encore onstage.

The Guadalajara Youth Orchestra (Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Guadalajara) celebrates its tenth anniversary with a gala concert at the regal Degollado Theater.  Works by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Revueltas will be included in the program.

The Tuesday Martes de Música y Ópera series sponsored by the Jalisco Culture Department attracts some truly stellar classical performers and it’s all free!  Coming up: Leonor Montijo (piano) and Alfonso Gonzalez (cello) interpret works by Franck, Lobato, Fauré, Ravel, Mendelssohn and Rachmaninov on February 9. Ricardo Calderon (tenor) and Patricia Perez (soprano) are accompanied by pianist Hector Acosta, interpreting romanzas and zarzuela duets from Spain, on February 16. And direct from the Northern Lights Festival in Ajijic on February 23 will be David Fung on piano and Grace Park on violin, playing works by Mozart, Ravel, Rachmaninov and Scarlatti.
