Contemporary Sounds

Popular contemporary music sessions continue each Monday with the Daniel López Jazz Trío on April 18.

Tuesday recitals

The Martes de Música y Ópera series sponsored by the Jalisco Culture Department attracts some truly stellar classical performers and it’s all free!  Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. On April 19: tenor Jorge Taddeo and pianist Ernesto Tonatiuh. April 26: 12-member chamber group directed by Guillermo Salvador interprets indigenous music from Jalisco.

Thursday Dance

Free Thursday contemporary dance recitals continue in April with a series of works for children featuring local troupes.  “Érase una vez” on April 21, “El Hombre Que Solo Sabía Amar” on April 28.  Contemporary groups featured in May are N.E.A. 2016 on May 12, Danza Capital on May 19 and Bruja Danza on Mayb 26.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

“The Art of Mendelssohn.” Soloist is acclaimed Spanish violinist Leticia Moreno.  Works by Mendelssohn and Revueltas.

Metropolitan Opera House live transmission of the company’s premiere of Donizetti’s “Roberto Devereux,” conducted by Maurizio Benini and directed by David McVicar.

Carmen

MAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL. The festival opens with the Antonio Gades Company from Spain giving two presentations of the famous ballet “Carmen,” with music by Bizet.

Magic Bubble Show

Russian artist Victor Artamonov creates a mind-blowing show of bubble magic, including gigantic soap bubbles that can hold a person inside. Kids and adults will be impressed.

Mime

MAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL. Talented French mimes Patrice Thibaud and Philippe Leygnac put on a show for kids (and adults with a sense of humor), Cocorico.

The Legend of Zelda

The latest edition of The Legend of Zelda symphony will add brand-new music and visuals from the new The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes game for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. These scores and game play images from the new game will join the show’s classic repertoire from seasons past, maintaining the beloved experience fans have come to expect.

Piano recital

MAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL. Hungarian pianist Gergely Boganyi performs works by Franz Schubert, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Bela Bartok and Franz Liszt.  One of the leading pianists of his generation, Boganyi has won a string of awards and is also known for his revolutionary piano designs.

Jazz concert

The New York Jazz All Stars series, sponsored by the Universidad de Guadalajara in conjunction with Jazz at Lincoln Center, presents Clarence Pen and Penn Station. Famed drummer Clarence Penn is the leader of multiple bands, a composer, a prolific producer, and an educator. Expect an evening of explosive, yet nuanced jazz with Penn and his quartet.

Orchestral 

MAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL.  German pianist Lilya Zilberstein joins the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra to interpret the works of Sergei Rachmaninov, Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss. In addition to her orchestral appearances, Zilberstein has presented recitals in many of the world’s musical capitals. Several of her recordings made for Deutsche Grammophon have drawn enthusiastic reviews.

Glen Miller Orchestra

Nostalgic concert of 1940s music and wartime chart toppers. Featuring classic hits such as “Moonlight Serenade,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” and “Pennsylvania 6500.”

Jazz

MAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL.  British jazz singer Zara McFarlane shows off her talents. She released her debut album, Until Tomorrow, in 2011. Named one of Los Angeles Times’ “Faces to Watch” in 2013,  she has already shared stages with legends such as Gregory Porter and Dianne Reeves.

Dance from Russia

The St. Petersburg Classic Ballet presents “Giselle,” considered one of the finest works in classical dance.

Opera

MAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL.   Internationally acclaimed Mexican baritone Alfredo Daza accompanies the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (with invited conductor Ivan Lopez Reynoso) in pieces by composers Ruggero Leoncavallo, Gioachino Rossini, Vincenzo Bellini, Ricardo Castro and Maria Grever.

Modern dance

Quebec contemporary dance company, Cas Public, present “Symphonie Dramatique,” featuring the music of Berlioz, Gounod, Tchaikovsky  and Prokofiev and choreography by founder Hélène Blackburn.

Circus arts

MAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL.  Contemporary circus arts group Les 7 Doigts de la Main from Quebec close the festival with their acclaimed show, “Traces,” described by the New York Times as “a dose of pure urban adrenaline.”

Pied Piper

The Ballet Jalisco, the state’s only professional dance troupe, presents “The Pied Piper of Hamelin,” based on the version of the famous legend penned by Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm in 1816.

GR RECOMMENDS: Romeo & Juliet

In honor of the 400th anniversary of the death of English literary great William Shakespeare and International Dance Day, the Ballet Jalisco and the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra team up for a special presentation of this famous classical dance work telling the familiar tale of two young lovers at the mercy of powerful families and their own hearts, set to Prokofiev’s soaring score.
