Quality alert: new gift shop opens at renowned gallery

The University of Guadalajara’s elegant, midtown art museum, the Museo de las Artes, has reopened its artesania shop after a long hiatus.

The new store, dubbed Tienda MUSA, enjoys a much more prominent position than the former one. It is housed just inside the front entrance of the two-story, white building, which some say looks like a wedding cake. (The shop is next to the legendary Paraninfo, a beautiful auditorium that is also inside the wedding cake and is covered with renowned murals by Jose Clemente Orozco.)

Tienda MUSA offers carefully selected merchandise that seems to make it an ideal place to find in the shortest possible time, the best quality of artistic items that say “Mexico.” With the University of Guadalajara and the museum’s curatorial staff behind the shop, one may feel more confident than usual about the provenance of the wares.

There are some gift items for men at the shop, such as wallets and belts, in addition to a plethora of women’s items, including scarves, handbags, jewelry boxes, top quality manta clothing and, of course, jewelry. (The jewelry, much of it of silver, amber, turquoise or precious stones, is made by well known designers such as Flora Maria and Tangram.) There is a little men’s manta clothing too, in addition to unisex items, such as camera belts, mugs, art books and art; and a smattering of children’s items, such as colorful, woolen stuffed animals.
