Culinary Arts Society meets, plans October picnic

The September meeting and competition of the Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA) featured Lebanese or Turkish main dishes and berry desserts.

Winners in the main dish category included Bev Denton’s Lebanese lemon lentil soup in first place and in a tie for second place, Anita Hocker’s Lebanese makhlouta and Mary Ann Waite’s tavuk shish Kebab. Third place went to Diane Gota for her etli yaprak domasi.  Winning with berry desserts were, in first place, Hazel Tash’s summer tiramisu; taking second place was Beth Cathcart’s Nova Scotia Blueberry Grunt with Maritime Whipped Cream; and in third place, Margaret Ancira’s berry tortilla torte.

Tash’s tiramisu was a clean sweep as it also ranked first in the presentation and people’s choice dessert category. Among the main dishes, Denton took the people’s choice nod while Waite’s kebab’s won in the presentation category.

The second annual CASAFEST picnic featuring barbecue ribs, chicken and chorizo with all the fixings has been slated for Sunday, October 26, 2 to 5 p.m. A portion of the proceeds from the event will go to the San Antonio Soup Kitchen and Operation Feed in San Juan Cosalá. Music by the Doo Wops, and plenty of fun are scheduled during the afternoon.

Tickets are 200 pesos and can be purchased at Diane Pearl Colecciones, Mia’s Boutique, or Lois Cugini’s Opus Boutique. VIP Reserved Tables for groups of 10 are available by calling Leslie Yanko at (376) 766-2304 or Mary Ann Waite at (376) 766-1436.

The next CASA meeting and competition will be at 4 p.m. on Monday, October 20 at Min Wah Restaurant. The completion categories will be Italian main dishes and Italian desserts.
