Mariachi gala
Well-known singer Dina Buendia and her musicians will headline a mariachi gala at the Hotel Real de Chapala on Friday, February 8, 7 p.m.

Proceeds from the concert will help purchase materials and provide much-needed maintenance at the 500-year-old San Andres Apostol Catholic Church in Ajijic.
Tickets are 250 pesos. Buy them at the church office or from Trish Conner at 766-5233.

The Ajijc Society of the Arts (ASA) will meet Monday, February 4, 10 a.m. at La Bodega Restaurant, (16 de Septiembre 124, Ajijic).
Marian Decker will have more information about the upcoming open studio plans and adaptations. Salvador Ortiz will be showing “out of the box” examples for displaying, framing and presenting canvas art, paper art and jeweled art. He’ll demonstrate how interesting framing can continue the story or idea launched in your art.
Arrive early. The coffee is on at 9:30 a.m. All are welcome.
Exhibition
U.S. painter Edward Gillian opens an exhibition of his oil paintings at the Efren Gonzalez Art Center (Marcos Castellanos 7, Ajijic), Saturday, February 2, 3 p.m.
Gillian’s work focuses on women and ranges from figurative art to cubism. The paintings are vibrant and reflect Gillian’s association with the coast of Mexico where he has lived for many years. Cocktails and snacks will be served.
Theater tour
Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) is offering an hour-long tour of their facility on Monday, January 28 at 10 a.m. There is no admission charge and everyone is welcome.
LLT President Pat Carroll and 1st Vice President Sally Jo Bartlett will lead the tour through what is an amazing community theater.
Tour participants will be met in the LLT lobby and taken on a tour of all areas of the theater (including some that non-thespians would never guess were there). They will also get a chance to watch a bit of a live rehearsal for LLT’s upcoming musical comedy “The Drowsy Chaperone.”
Miniatures
Those who weren’t able to make it to the Lake Chapala Painting Guild show of miniatures at Galeria Sol Mexicano (Colon 13, Ajijic) on February 1, should make a point of seeing it while it’s still in place.
Participating artists are Steve Achs, Geraldine Classen, Winnie Hunt, Julie Elizabeth Mignard, Carolina Owers, Bev Kephart, Betty Petersen, Varn and Lois Schroff.
If you did miss the opening, be sure to stop before the show closes on February 21. The gallery is open from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
Painting workshop
Ratindra Das, the internationally-known watercolor teacher, is returning to Ajijic to conduct a workshop entitled An Eye for Design at the Efren Gonzalez Gallery from Monday, February 11 through Thursday, February 14.  Each of the four days begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. Classes will be given both in studio and on location.
Das is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society and six other U.S. watercolor societies.
“In most cases my paintings hardly resemble reality,” he says. “They exaggerate, lie, add, delete, change.”
The visit is being sponsored by the Lake Chapala Painting Guild. Gonzalez is courteously allowing the use of his gallery at Marcos Castellanos 7 in Ajijic for the classes. Although the demonstrations will be in watercolor, instruction will also be valuable for acrylic painters.
The cost of the workshop is 2,500 pesos.  A non-refundable registration fee of 1,000 pesos will hold a space. The balance is due on the first day of class. A supply list provided with registration.
