Ribera arts review - May 9, 2014

Watercolors by the late Georg Rauch are the focus of a new show at Quattro Gallery, Colon 9, Ajijic.

The artist, best known for his expressionistic oils and serigraphs, considered watercolors his “hobby,” an artistic expression while traveling. The majority of the works hung in this show are Rauch’s views of New York City, with the twin towers still dominating the background. Some of his Mexican watercolors of Angahuan and Patzcuaro, Michoacan and of Ajijic are included in this rare showing of the popular artist’s little-known hobby genre.

Quattro is closed on Mondays.

Festivities for moms

Guadalajara’s master mime artist Alberto Stanley will appear as the star attraction at two lakeside area cultural events programmed this weekend in celebration of Mother’s Day.

The actor’s talents in mute physical comedy will be showcased in a performance on Friday, May 9, 7 p.m. at Jocotepec’s Casa de la Cultura, located adjacent to the central plaza. The program also features romantic music by Juan José Ramírez and Christian Cuevas.

Stanley is also booked to take the stage at the Centro Cultural de Ajijic on Saturday, May 10, 6:30 p.m. The mime show will be complemented by poetry recitations, along with special surprises for the moms in attendance.

Mother’s Day festivities continue on Sunday, May 11, with the traditional celebration slated for 4 p.m. at the Lienzo Charro bullring located on Calle Revolución. Organized by Ajijic’s Asociación de Charros in conjunction with the town’s government Delegación headed by Hector España, the party will pack in crowds for afternoon of family fun. There will be free gifts for moms handed out through raffles and games. The highlight is watching the boldest of the ladies wrangle a young bull with a cash prize tied to its horns.

All three events are open to the public free of charge.

People’s choice screenings

Cinemas del Lago at Plaza Bugambilias continues its Cine-ME program benefiting local charities with the double screening of a silver screen classic on the bill for Tuesday, May 13, at 12:30 and 9 p.m.

The film title will be selected through a people’s choice voting system based on the number of “like” clicks and favorable comments registered for choices displayed on the Facebook page of proprietor David Reynoso. The options for next week are Charlie Chaplin’s “The Gold Rush,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “Gone with the Wind,” “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “The Shining,” “I am Sam,” “Edward Scissorhands,” “Schindler’s List,” “Seven Pounds,” and the French romantic comedy “Amélie.”

Once again, half of the box office will be donated to Chapala’s Love in Action children’s home. In the future other lakeside non-profit groups dedicated to assisting the disabled and underprivileged will be named as beneficiaries.

In addition to supporting good causes, the Cine-ME program offers opportunities to view highly acclaimed motion pictures and art films that stand out for story lines revolving around human values and social issues. Choices for the May 27 shows will be posted about two weeks in advance.
