Art for Peace

A collective exhibition entitled Arte por La Paz (Art for Peace) opens Saturday, May 31, 8 p.m. at Estudio Galeria Metzcalli, Carretera Poniente 43, in San Juan Cosalá.

A program of live music featuring Fernando Zamora will highlight the show’s cocktail inauguration. The event is open to the public free of charge.

 

El Xiu at La Rueda

Popular guitarist El Xiu, known for his finesse in Mexican folkloric, Latin fusion, rumba, and cumbia music, will take the stage at La Rueda Café and Gallery on Saturday, May 31, 8 p.m.

There is no cover for this production which will feature El Xiu and his fiery guitar playing trova, rumba and rock. La Rueda is at Calle Porfirio Díaz 120 in San Juan Cosalá.

 

Gypsy Night

Dig out the bangle bracelets, floral bandanas and swirling skirts and gear up to attend the Saturday, May 31 Night of the Gypsy Party slated to begin at 6 p.m. at La Vita Bella Hotel and Restaurant at Rafael Osuna 250 in the San Juan Raquet Club area.

Plans for the evening include live music and DJ Tablao Franco, and a gypsy costume contest. Call (387) 761-1445 for reservations or information.

 

Mexican music fest

Chapala’s Centro Cultural González Gallo will be the venue for the 12th Encuentro de Arpas, Salterios y Más, a festival of traditional Mexican music to be held Wednesday, June 4, 2 to 10 p.m. See story on page 11 for full details.

 

Oils by Efren González

New works by Ajijic artist Efren González will be unveiled on Friday, June 6, 6 p.m., in a display going up in the lobby at Chapala City Hall. The collection features more than two dozen oil paintings.

 

Jazz improv with film art

Jocotepec’s Casa de la Cultura will host a performance by the Guadalajara jazz group Acacia tied into the projection of animated films by famed Czech surrealist artist Jan Švankmajer. The event is scheduled for Friday, June 6, 8 p.m. Admission is free to the public.

Now recognized as one of the world’s most accomplished animators, Švankmajer was practically unknown outside his home country until the early 1980’s. Trademarks of his films include bizarre storylines and the use of clay figures and inanimate objects brought to life through stop-motion technique.

Headed by guitarist Juan Castañón and percussionist Miguel Soto, Acacia will perform improvised free jazz during the screening of a selection of Švankmajer’s best film shorts.

 

7th Ajijic Collective

“Entre Sueños” (In Dreams) is the theme chosen for the 7th Annual Collective Exhibit which opens at the Centro de Cultura in Ajijic on Saturday, June 7, 6:30 p.m.

The work of a large group of local artists will hang in the Centro de Cultura on the north side of the Ajijic plaza through June 26. Included in the stellar lineup are Sánchez Cocodria, Angelica Gardo Larias, Cathy Chalvignac, Christian Hernández Váquez, Chuni Medeles, Maria di Paola, Jill Flyer, Luz Preciado, Xilll Fessenden, Agnes Thomas, Santiago Fregoso, Alberto “Beto Rock” Muñoz, Aracel Santana, Dulce Luna, Maka Lara, Fano Bak, Héctor Arozoco, Roberto Aceves, Karta Hernández, Lauro Gutierrez, and Thomas Muschlechner.

 

Graphics Exhibit

An exhibit showcasing the work of more than 40 local artists will open with a cocktail reception at on Saturday, June 7, 6 p.m. at Coxala Gráfica, the gallery located between the Cruz Roja and Restaurante Doña Lola at Carretera Pte. 37 in Ajijic.

According to organizer Luis Pinedo, the unusual show is a collaboration of Veta Gráfica and dozens of area artists producing works of art on paper. Viewers will see a number of distinct types of print art including lithographs. The show will remain in place at Coxala Grafica through June 12. Those who attend are also invited to the after party at La Sangrita Mezcal.
