Maestros del Arte scores again!

Last weekend’s 13th Feria Maestros del Arte was a whopping success thanks to the astonishing selection of first-rate handicrafts and folk art put on display, record attendance boosted by three days of flawless fall weather and the dedication of the event’s organizers, volunteers and supporters.

Exhibitors racked up big sales as shoppers went wild scooping up stunning goods brought to their doorstep by outstanding Mexican artesanos from near and far.

Unique cultural exchange experiences were the highlight for visiting craftsmen and women and the local residents who opened their doors as lodging hosts. And the fair earned one more notch in its belt for promoting and preserving the country’s rich artistic heritage.

Son de México

The Ballet Folclórico Son de México from San Juan Cosalá will appear at the Auditorio de la Ribera on Saturday, November 22, 6 p.m., to present Chicomoztoc, a dazzling dance spectacle representing an untold legend of the pre-Hispanic era.

Showcasing original choreography and staging by the troupe’s talented artistic director Luis Guzmán, the performance revolves around the migration of the Aztec people from their mythical homeland Aztlán and passage by Lake Chapala prior to their arrival in the Valle de México and the founding of the ancient city of Tenochtitlán.

Tickets, available at the auditorium box office at 150 pesos per person, are reportedly selling fast.

Squeaky Wheels

Readings at the December Squeaky Wheels confab on Wednesday, December 5 at La Rueda in San Juan Cosala will fit the theme, “A Premature Christmas.”

Area writers who will be sharing their work during the session will be Harriet Hart, Bob Drynan, Margie Keane, Larry Kolczak, Judy Dykstra-Brown, Patricia Hemingway and Mel Goldberg. Each writer will have the stage for between nine and 20 minutes.

Those attending should arrive at La Rueda to order their beverages, food or desserts by 3 p.m. so that service can be completed before the readings begin at 3:30 p.m.

La Rueda is on Porfirio Diaz, about one half block west of the restaurant Viva Mexico. Turn toward the lake at the San Juan Cosalá stoplight. At the plaza, turn right onto Porfirio Diaz and drive about two and a half blocks. Watch for the vine-covered façade and the large wheel sculpture on the roof of La Rueda – it is on the mountain side of the street.

Iván Antillón

Musican, poet and self-described crazy man, Tapatio Iván Antillón is scheduled to release his new book “Zanate” during a cocktail opening on Friday, November 28, at 8 p.m. in the Jocotepec Casa de Cultura.

As a musician, Antillón dabbled in a number of forums and techniques, until he developed his personal guitar style by joining facets of urban music with new vocals and then adding the marked influences of Bob Dylan, Rockdrigo González and Neil Young. His inclination to experiment with sounds and words has led Antillón to create a prolific portfolio of musical work, some of which is included in his CDs, “El Barco Ebrio” and “Ciudad.”

Now the musician is also a novelist who enjoys playing games with words as do his literary heroes: Bourroughs, Miller and Bokowsky. Zanate, written in the form of a diary, is artisan bound and is accompanied with a CD of 12 songs reflecting the coastal areas of Nayarit and Jalisco.
