Cancelled Show
Mark Rome regrets to announce the cancellation of the Roslyn Kind concert scheduled for Saturday, March 7 in the Auditorio de la Ribera. Kind plans to return to Mexico in 2016 and looks forward to performing at Lake Chapala.
Rome assures ticket holders that they can obtain a refund at the store of Jose Melendez on the Ajijic plaza or by calling Alejandra at (33) 1198-7318.
Ajijic Plaza
A theater marionettes event will take the stage on the Ajijic plaza in the Centro Cultural de Ajijic on Sunday, March 8, 1 p.m.
Piano Concert
Pianist Antonio Cabrero will appear in concert at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala, Sunday, March 8, 4 p.m.
The concert honors the 92nd year of the old Chapala railway terminal and the program will feature Mexican music from the early 1900s. Donations for the event are 200 pesos.
Bravo Gallery
The Bravo! Gallery, Rio Bravo 10, Ajijic, presents the work of two new artists on Thursday, March 12, 6 p.m.
Varn works in acrylic and watercolor and Marsha McCarthy creates carved ceramics which have already become well known in the United States. Works by Dona Johnson and Linzy Roberts are also featured.
The exhibit is in conjunction with the opening night performance of “I, Claudia” at the Bravo! Theater. The works will be on display during the show.
Lip Sync 7
“This season’s Lip Sync 7 promises to be a wild affair,” says director Michael McLaughlin. The popular show will run from Friday, March 20 through Tuesday, March 24 in the Auditorio de la Ribera. The Sunday matinee will begin at 3 p.m. and all other shows start at 7 p.m.
Tickets are priced at 250 pesos for the center section and 150 pesos for seats in the side sections. Tickets are available at the Auditorio, the Lake Chapala Society, Yoli’s Salon, El Granero, Casi Nuevo and the Chapala Real Estate in Chapala.
McLaughlin adds, “This is a benefit show for the Auditorio and for the School for Special Children. The 27 acts include: Elvis, Pavarotti, ZZ Top, Janis Joplin, Devo, Marlene Dietrich, Boy George, Michael Jackson and songs from the Broadways shows Spamalot and Wonderland.”
Photos at La Misión
Jamie Barbiery and Karen Spencer present their Mexican Perspectives in Photography exhibition at La Misión Restaurant with an opening reception on Friday, March 13, 2-5 p.m. There will be music during the reception and the cash bar will feature two for one beer or margaritas. La Misión is at Rio Bravo 7 in Ajijic.
The stunning photos with Mexican themes are printed on silk material. A portion of the art sales will go to La Misión to help support their ongoing project, feeding the needy, and to help them achieve their long-term objective to change the lives of area mothers and children in need. The show will remain in place until April 10.
Flemish rocker
Ley Memphis and friends play Friday, March 13, 8 p.m. at Barco.
Belgian Louis Hale (Ley) was a recording artist in the 1960s and 70s with a number-three hit on the top-10 Flemish chart. He opened for Procul Harum in Brussels and was to open for the Rolling Stones before that concert was canceled.
After many years in sales traveling the world, the multilingual rocker settled in Mexico and has been a TV chef for Azteca’s Channel 7 and Televisa’s Channel 4, as well as a self-taught professor of business psychology and marketing at the ITESM University in Guadalajara. He says he is finally getting back to “do what I always wanted: playing and singing music.” Barco is on the Chapala-Joco carretera, next to Pemex in Ajijic.
ASA Judged Show
The Annual March Judged Art Show with entries in a variety of media by members of the Ajijic Society of the Arts opens on Saturday, March 14 with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Ajijic Cultural Center. During the evening reception on the opening day, show visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite pieces of art, with the votes going to determine the winners in the People’s Choice Awards competition.
The show, which will include oils, acrylics, watercolors, mixed media, sculpture and jewelry, will remain on view in the center until March 27.
Migrants in Dance
La Bestia: Historias que Migran...Historias con Rostros,” a modern dance program portraying the perils of riding Mexico’s notorious “Train of Death,” will be staged Sunday, March 15, 1:30 p.m., in a one-time performance at the Auditorio de La Ribera, La Floresta. General admission at the door is set at 100 pesos.
The award-winning show choreographed by Ana Paula Uruñuela dramatizes poignant true life stories of Central Americans migrants who hitch rides on freight trains to cross Mexico en route to the U.S. border. The performance presented by a company of six dancers also features original music by Gerardo Martinez and snippets of dialogue drawn from real testimonies collected from survivors of treacherous journeys aboard “The Beast.”
Help from Photographer
Local photographer Cathie Simon has been working to help two local charities. Simon explains that her gallery, The Cat’s Eye at Constitucion 103A in Ajijic was opened to provide exposure for her photos and pet portraiture. She adds, “After reflection, I realized that the sales from the gallery is an opportunity that provide me with the means to give back to the community.”
Simon is dividing half of her profits from the sales of her photos and pet portraits between the School for Special Children and Lakeside Friends of the Animals. The Cat’s Eye will be open until early May on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or by appointment.
