Hard Travelin’
Don’t forget that New York performer Randy Noojin portrays singer, songwriter and activist Woody Guthrie in “Hard Travelin’ with Woody” at Club Exotica on Saturday, April 18, 7 p.m.
Noojin comes to lakeside just off a 40-city tour of a show featuring legendary Woody Guthrie songs such as “This Train is Bound for Glory,” “This Land is Your Land” and many others.
Tickets priced at 200 pesos per person are on sale at Yoly’s Unisex Salon, Plaza Bugambilias, and Diane Pearl Colecciones, Colon 1 at Calle Ocampo.
Naked Stage
The Naked Stage minimalist readers’ theater presents “Come Back to the Five & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean” by Ed Graczyk on Friday, April 24, Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26. All performances start at 4 p.m.
Directed by Jim Lloyd, the play is centered on a James Dean fan club that meets at a Texas five-and-dime store. The local star-studded cast includes Jim Ryan, Caroline McCormack, Damyn Young, Amy Friend, Lila Wells, Patricia Guy, Florette Schnelle and Sharon Lowry.
Naked Stage productions take place at Rio Bravo 10, Ajijic. Turn left on Rio Bravo and drive about two blocks toward the lake. The bar opens at 3 p.m. and the box office at 3:15 p.m.

Recital
Classically trained baritone Fernando Loher will give a recital in Chapala on Sunday, April 26 to help finance his music studies at the prestigious Lotte Lehmenn Academy in Berlin, Germany.
The Guadalajara native will perform at the Cultural Center Gonzalez Gallo, accompanied on the pianoforte by Marco Antonio Rodriguez. He will interpret three ariasand two ariettas from the bel canto era of opera, as well as seven Latin American songs.
Loher began his vocal training at Guadalajara’s Instituto Cultural Cabañas and is a former member of the Amadeus Children’s Chorus and Camerata Vocal “Half Tone.” In Guadalajara, he has performed at the Ex-Convento del Carman, Casa Museo Lopez Portillo, Capilla Tolsa, Teatro Degollado and Teatro Diana.
Loher has participated in several opera workshops and in 2011 sang the role of Betto in “Gianni Scchichi” at the Lyrical Workshop of Jalisco, under the direction of Andres Sarre. In 2012 he was selected to participate in a state-funded children’s operatic project. Loher has just finished a two-year stint with the Opera Workshop of Sinaloa, where he has twice taken the role of Papageno in Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.”
The recital is scheduled Sunday, April 26, 4 p.m. at the Cultural Center Gonzalez Gallo.
Galatea
Music of the Renaissance from Spain, Italy, England and France will be performed by the Guadalajara group Galatea at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo on Sunday, May 4, 4 p.m.
The members of the group include soprano Avelina de la O. Gutierrez Alcala, vihuela player Carlos Omar Lopez Gonzalez and violinist Miguel Hoyos Peña. Lopez Gonzalez is a professor at the University of Guadalajara music school.
Tipton Award
Lakeside writer and poet Jim Tipton just received notice that he was awarded the April 2015 Penn Cove Literary Award for his piece, “Plumber of the Year,” selected the best short story under 1,000 words. Tipton’s story is available to read online at whidbeystudents.com/2015/04/10/april-news-2015.
The award is an extension of the Whidbey Island Writers’ Workshop and the Northwest Institute of Literary Arts MFA program in Washington State. This is the first MFA program in the United States
to be offered by an organization of writers rather than a university.
Music and Spa
The Balneario of San Juan Cosala is hosting a night of music with the group Soprano on Saturday, April 25, beginning at 8 p.m. The event will be held at Spa Termal Tlalocan in San Juan Cosala, on the Carretera Chapala-Jocotepec at kilometer 13.
Art inaugration
Works by Pat Apt and Chile de Joco will be on display at the Casa de Cultura in Jocotepec until May 14. Everyone is invited to a free cocktail inauguration of the exhibit on Friday, April 17, 8 p.m. There will be live music.
