Show for Chapel repairs

A reminder that the Tierra y Libertad folk dance troupe will offer a special performance Saturday, November 14, 6 p.m., at the Auditorio de La Ribera, as a benefit for the flood damage repairs and restoration of the San José Chapel in La Floresta. 

Tickets, priced at 150 pesos for seating in the center section, 100 pesos for side seats, are available at Yoly’s Unisex Salon, Papelería Hidalgo, SuperLake, the San Andres parish office and the auditorium box office.

Extravaganza  

The last two performances of the Extravaganza variety show are scheduled at Bravo! Theatre on Saturday, November 14, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 15, 3 p.m. Tickets are available at Diane Pearl Colecciones, Mia’s Boutique or from any member of Los Cantantes del Lago. 

Patteye Simpson and Timothy G. Ruff Welch are co-directing a show that features mime, song, dance and improv acts. Proceeds will help defray the costs of Los Cantantes’ Viva Cuba 2016 Tour.

Ballet Folklorico

San Juan Cosala’s International Son de Mexico troupe of folkloric dancers hits the stage of the Auditorio de la Ribera with the final performances of their new show on Sunday, November 15, noon, and Friday, November 20, 6 p.m. 

Director Luis Guzman helped the talented dancers prepare the new program ahead of an international competition to be held in Peru next year. Show tickets are available at the auditorium, Galeria Efren Gonzalez, Yoly’s Beauty Shop and Diane Pearl Colecciones.  

Viva Baroque Concert

Five gifted musicians will perform pieces by J.S. Bach, Handel and Teleman for the Thursday, November 19, 7 p.m. Baroque Concert presented by Viva la Musica at the Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center (Chapala’s former train station). The acoustics of this intimate venue are ideal for chamber music.

Jacques Dupriez will play the ancient baritone violin on which he has given 20 world premieres. Harpsichordist Hans Peter Aull has performed and taught music for 40 years in Europe, Ecuador and Mexico. Eduardo Arambula has been interpreting medieval and renaissance music on the recorder more than 30 years. Ajijic violinist Diego Rojas plays with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) ad cellist Yalissa Cruz from Vera Cruz, another JPO member, also plays in the Orquesta Filarmonica Ricardo Castro in Durango. 

Tickets at 200 pesos may be purchased at Diane Pearl Colecciones or at the door prior to the concert. With seating limited, plan to arrive early. 

Musician’s Day Festival

Chapala’s Department of Culture is organizing a full day of festivity to celebrate the Día del Músico, Sunday, November 22. A musical program featuring live performers and multiple genres will be held at the Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia, running from noon until all participating artists finish, taking turns on the auditorium stage. Admission is open to the public free of charge.

Local musicians interested in scheduling appearances at the event are asked to sign up by Thursday, November 19. For information visit the Culture office in the back patio of City Hall, open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or call 765-8000, extension 106.

Benefit Concert

Area residents have the opportunity to see children helping children when the Centro Regional de Estudios Musicales (CREM) Chorus and Orchestra present a benefit Christmas concert on Sunday, November 29, 11 a.m. 

Held in the Jardin de Eventos Lomas de Chapinaya at Carretera Chapala-Jocotepec 975-A in Ajijic, the concert will provide additional funding for the 35 children who reside in the Villa Infantil orphanage near Jocotepec. 

Tickets at 400 pesos for adults and 150 pesos for children aged over five years are available at Tony’s Restaurant, Fiesta del Sol, La Reserva and El Punto Extra de Chapala. For information about tickets call (33) 3577-2768 or (33) 3815-6695. 

This event is one of a series sponsored by Accion Voluntario, a local group that raises funds for special projects for lakeside orphanages. This concert will repair and reinforce the gate at Villa Infantil to improve security for the home. 

Best work

This painting by former LCS Children’s Art Program participant Oscar Orlando Ibarra Lopez, 17, was judged one of the six best works in the recent Ajijic Society of the Arts “Nature of Mexico” show at the Ajijic Cultural Center. It was also the first sale in the exhibit.

Theater donation

The Lakeside Little Theatre shares a portion of the proceeds from each of the season’s plays with a different local charity.  At the Saturday, November 7 opening night of “Stepping Out,” President Peter Luciano (right) presents a donation for the School for Special Children.
