Ribera Arts Review - December 12, 2015

Art Opening

The artists of Gallery Los Amigos are hosting a Christmas exhibit of their current work on Saturday, December 12, 6-8 p.m. Wine and snacks will be served.

One rental space is available in the gallery. Those interested can talk to Victor Romero.

Gallery Los Amigos is at Javier Mina 35, Ajijic.

Double The Joy

The Winter Concert: Double the Joy features one of the season’s most fun and most unusual programs.

The enthusiastic students (ages 7-17) from the Academia de Ukulele de la Ribera take the stage for the first hour to play a variety of music, including hum-along tunes such as John Lennon’s “Imagine” and traditional Mexican villancicos (carols).  The second section showcases Del Rey, an international ukulele impresario and specialist in Memphis Jug Band music.

The concert takes place on Sunday, December 13, 4 p.m. at the Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center (old Chapala train station).

The Memphis Jug Band was an American group featuring harmonica, kazoo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, piano, washboard and jug that was popular from the mid-1920s through the late 1950s. The band played slow blues, pop songs, and toe-tapping upbeat dance numbers with jazz and string band flavors.

Tickets are 200 pesos at Diane Pearl Colecciones, Charter Club or the door. Proceeds go to the Academia de Ukulele, which is currently teaching ukulele to nearly 40 young musicians. The proceeds are earmarked to purchase more instruments and pay for more instruction by professional Mexican musicians.  This is an important endeavor that allows Mexican children to learn a skill that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Mac Morison

Songstress Judy Hendrick and the talented Luci Merritt join Mac Morison as he takes the stage for his annual benefit concert on Monday, December 14, 7:30 p.m. at Club Exotica on the Ajijic Plaza.

In “One More for the Road,” Morison sings audience pleasing jazz standards made famous by greats such as Sinatra, Bennett, Torme and Damone.

Other acts include former professional dancers Corrlander Jones and Alexis Hoff, and stand-up comic Jeff Capri, who is returning by popular demand.

Tickets for the show cost 400 pesos and are available at Diane Pearl Colecciones, Mia’s Boutique and Su Casa. The show benefits “Ajijic Cares,” an educational program that shares information in schools and for at-risk teens about prevention of STDs, and provides free HIV and AIDS testing.

VIVA Musica

The Hermosillo Family returns to perform Christmas music on Thursday, December 17, 7 p.m. at the Auditorio de la Ribera.

The delighted audience reaction to the 2014 lakeside concert convinced Viva la Musica to invite the Hermosillo children and their parents to sing and play their violins and piano again this year. The lauded tenor Fernando Rodriguez will also perform.

Baritone Antonio Hermosillo and his pianist/composer wife, Gaby Zepeda, are outstanding musicians, but their children, Mariana, Lucia and Jorge, tend to steal the show with their extraordinary talent and charm.

Sisters Mariana and Lucia open the concert playing the second movement of Bach´s Concerto for Two Violins. After winning several competitions, these young girls were invited to perform with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra.

Tickets for the concert are 200 pesos and may be purchased at the Auditorium, at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) box office on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon and at Diane Pearl Colecciones.

Blues Band

The Cadavieco Blues Band hits the stage at El Bar Co on Thursday December 17, 7:30 p.m.  The popular group plays a wide selection of blues and rock oldies, always with the goal of giving the audience a selection of great music. The cover is 100 pesos.

El Bar Co is next to the Pemex in Ajijic. For reservations call (376) 766-0452.

Delayed Concert

The Beethoven Atacck (sic) concert by the Sinfonica del Lago scheduled for Friday, December 18 has been cancelled and will be rescheduled in January.

“There are so many other excellent musical performances during this month,” a Sinfonica spokesperson said.  “We don’t want to compete and take attention from the other events.”

Bel Canto

A recital by sopranos Cesia Mendoza Gonzalez and Vanessa Guadalupe Gutierrez Gutierrez, accompanied by pianist Hector Miguel Ocampo Guiza, is scheduled for Friday, December 18, 8 p.m. in the Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia, the former Chapala town hall, at the intersection of Avenida Madero and Hidalgo.

Maria Di Paola

Works by Jesus Reyes Cordero, a painter from Zacatecas with a 40-year career trajectory, will be on display at Galeria Di Paola until Wednesday, January 20.

Reyes is one of the most representative artists of the contemporary surrealism movement in Mexico.

The concepts of free association of objects and techniques is recurrent in most of his pieces. Body painting, digital photography, beer bottles, and dry herbs from the desert of Zacatecas are melded together in a cohesive piece.

His work “Nude” is made up of ten individual 30x30 centimeter pieces, plus three 50 cm square center pieces. Together they comprise a sophisticated master work graphics that barely reveals the initial motif of a naked lady.

Art Sale

A group of local artisans and artists will host a Christmas Sale on Saturday and Sunday, December 18 and 19, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Elena’s Restaurant in Ajijic. Breakfast and Mexican food will be served during the day. The restaurant is located between the San Andres church and the main plaza at Parroquia 9.

CREM Concert

The 25th anniversary gala concert by the CREM music school and chorus will be presented in the Auditorio de la Ribera on Sunday, December 20, 7 p.m.

Admission is 150 pesos, with tickets available at the auditorium, Diane Pearl Colecciones and the Centro Cultural de Ajijic.

Christmas Concert

Daniel Medeles and invited guest director Jose Pablo Medeles Cordova will lead the choir and orchestra of the Orquesta Filarmonica Infantil de la Ribera de Chapala in a selection of holiday music on Sunday, December 20, 7 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Ajijic.  Admission is free of charge.

Le Petit Cabaret

Six of lakeside’s favorite new singers are joining forces to create an intimate and uplifting Christmassy show on Wednesday, December 23, 3 to 5 p.m. at La Bodega in Ajijic.

In this debut performance, Le Petit Cabaret features each vocalist performing three holiday solos. Call (376) 766-1002 for reservations. There is a 50-peso cover.
