Ribera Arts Review - April 8, 2016

Art exhibits

Sol Mexicano Galeria de Arte will host a reception for whimsical painter Pat Apt and an end-of-the-season pottery sale by Robert Miller Friday, April 8, 4-7 p.m. The gallery is located at Colon 13, Ajijic.

“Fantastic Images” is the theme of an art show by Jesus Lopez Vega that opens at Studio 18 Art Gallery Friday, April 8, 4-7 p.m. Lopez Vega will be showing watercolors, artistic engraving and mixed media. Refreshments will be served. Studio 18 is located at Colon 18, Ajijic.

Jaime Barbiery and Karen Spencer offer up their photographs in “Inspirations Mexicana” at Gecko Art Gallery Studio, Saturday, April 9, with a reception from 5-7 p.m. Refreshments and entertainment will be offered. Gecko Gallery is located at Ocampo 61 (next to Manix) in Ajijic. The show will be up through April 22.

Donation

Beth Leitch, secretary of Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) presents a portion of the proceeds from the opening night of “Other Desert Cities” to Becky and Bob Plinke, who represent La Ola children’s shelter. La Ola is a shelter for children age 3-18; providing a loving, family-style atmosphere for disadvantaged children from the streets, abandonment or abusive situations. LLT has selected six charities to receive a donation from the opening night receipts for each of season 51’s plays. 

Stepping out

Friday, April 8. Los Traficantes del Ritmo are up at Adelita’s Bar & Grill in San Antonio Tlayacapan from 8:30 p.m.  The Blue Velvet Jazz Quartet plays La Mezcaleria Ajijic (Morelos 12), 9:30 p.m. Noe Raygoza and the Men in Black will be at The Iron Horse starting 7 p.m. The Iron Horse is on the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar, across from Mom’s Restaurant.

Saturday, April 9. Catch the last show of the season by Blue Jay Slim and the Blues Machine featuring Paul Brier on saxophone at Adelita’s Bar & Grill, beginning 8:30 p.m. A guitar trio of Tim Tracey, Marc Bennett and Juan Castañon will play blues, blue grass, folk-rock classics and country from 7:30 p.m. at The Bistro (Ocampo 71, Ajijic). Time Machine plays pop, rock and on Saturday, beginning 9 p.m. 

Sunday, April 10. Enjoy Mike Fortier’s jazz quartet with Johnny X on bass, Archie Salcedo on drums and Will Zavala on keyboards at El Bar-Co on the Carretera in Ajijic, starting 4:30 p.m. Daniel Cordero plays at the Iron Horse, 3- 7 p.m.

Pianismo fundraiser

Three outstanding pianists take the stage Saturday, April 9, 7 p.m. at the Auditorio de la Ribera, La Floresta. The concert will feature Vlada Vassilieva and Anatoly Zatin – appearing together as Duo Petrof – and Saúl Ibarra, the 15-year-old prodigy who is blossoming under their tutelage at the University of Colima’s Fine Arts Institute.

Tickets for their joint appearance are available at the auditorium lobby box office, priced at 300 pesos. Proceeds will go into the CREM scholarship fund that supports about half of the school’s 60 students.

Classic Mexican tunes

The Orquesta Típica de Chapala will play at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo (old train station), Saturday, April 9, 7 p.m. as part of the celebrations of the 96th anniversary of the arrival of the train to Chapala. Free admittance.

Mariachi and Azucena

A razzle-dazzle musical dinner show takes place Thursday, April 14 at Chapala’s Palapa del Guayabo restaurant. This special event will help finance the purchase of a permanent facility for Jocotepec’s La Ola Casa Hogar, a shelter for children who have suffered abandonment, abuse and other hardships. 

Azucena, one of the stars of Noche a Noche, a musical variety show filmed at Channel 4 in Guadalajara, will be accompanied by the Alas de Mexico Mariachi, performing after the 5 p.m. opening act by Lulu, another talented vocalist. 

The donation for attending is 500 pesos per person, including the price for dinner. Tickets are on sale at Mia’s Boutique and Diane Pearl’s in Ajijic. Piano Recitals

The Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala continues its musical program with piano recitals each Thursday at 7 p.m. in April. 

April 14: Pianists S. Morales and Antonio Quiroz present first as soloists and then as a duo.  

April 21: Pablo Haro Legaspi interprets music by Robert Schumann, Rachmaninoff and Chopin.

April 28: Juan Pablo Garcìa performs music by Bach, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Prokofiev and Mexican composer Manuel Ponce.

Free admittance.

LLT Playhouse series

As part of the National Theatre Live/LLT Playhouse Series, Lakeside Little Theatre presents “Hamlet,” Saturday, April 16, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 17, 3 p.m. 

Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the title role in Shakespeare’s great tragedy. As a country arms itself for war, a family tears itself apart. 

Reserved seat tickets for each performance are 200 pesos each. Choose and reserve your seat at the time you purchase and pick up your tickets at the LLT box office on a first-come, first-served basis. LLT box office hours are every Wednesday and Thursday: 10 a.m. to noon and one hour before curtain.

Photography classes

Award-winning photographer Jill Flyer is offering classes this Spring. A “Basic, Basic, Basic” class is lined up for those who know almost nothing about photography, want to learn how cameras work, how to operate their cameras and get great photos.  Students will learn basics of composition and how to control light because controlling light is essential to photography.  Two classes are offered on Wednesdays, April 20 and 27, at 2 p.m. Cost is 300 pesos.

A portrait photography class is for anyone, from amateur to advanced. The course includes a slideshow review and critique of great master photographers. Students will experiment with the different effects and poses that they have learned. Emphasis will also be on capturing spontaneous moments. Three two-hour classes will be held Thursdays, April 21 and 28, at 2 p.m. Cost is 700 pesos.

Viva bus trips

Throughout April, Viva la Musica continues to offer bus trips to Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra concerts at the Teatro Degollado in Guadalajara. Tickets are 350 pesos, (450 for non-members), available at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) box office Thursdays and Fridays 10 a.m.- noon. Buses depart from the Carretera, just east of Farmacia Guadalajara in Ajijic.

Sunday, April 17: “The Art of Mendelsohn” – Mendelsohn, Violin Concerto with violin soloist Leticia Moreno; and Symphony No. 5.  Bus departs at 10:30 a.m. – concert starts 12:30 p.m.

Thursday, April 21: Liszt and Mozart – featuring Guadalajara tenor Cesar Delgado singing Mozart arias and Liszt Faust Symphony – Marco Parisotto, conductor. Bus departs 4 p.m. for a restaurant – concert starts 8.30 p.m.
