Stepping Out

Friday, April 22

Blue Velvet plays a dance night starting at 8 p.m. at Adelita’s Bar and Grill in Riberas. Call 766-0097 for reservations. 

La Bodega Ajijic presents Trobaderias with Moises Ramirez and Virgilio Silva starting 7:30 p.m. For reservations call 766-1002. 

Guadalajara duo Ivan and Ana Pau on piano and vocals entertains at La Mision Restaurant in West Ajijic. Reservations: (376)108-0887. 

Noe Raygoza and the Men in Black will be at The Iron Horse starting at 7 p.m. The bar is located across the carretera from Mom’s Restaurant in Riberas del Pilar. 

Saturday, April 23 

Violinist Victor, accompanied by his father, Ignacio will be featured at La Mision Restaurant, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Reservations: (376) 108-0887. 

Open Mic and Jam session for Lakeside musicians begins 8 p.m. at Ocampo 71 Restaurant. All acts get two free drinks and share in tips. Call (376)108 0862, for more information.

Sunday, April 24 

Soft chamber music featuring Victor and his magic violin is featured at Roberto’s 5 to 7 p.m.

Daniel Cordero plays unplugged at the Iron Horse from 3 to 7 p.m.

Ska bands fish for smiles

Modern tunes with a Caribbean beat will fill the air at the PeSKAndo una Sonrisa concert scheduled for Saturday, April 23, 4 p.m., at La Vela plaza, located at the west end of Chapala’s waterfront Malecón. The program will feature performances by eight different Ska bands. In lieu of admission, persons attending are asked to donate toys to be given out to underprivileged local youngsters on Children’s Day. Items that are non-violent and do not require batteries are preferred. 

Exhibit with fresh look

“Objects are Closer than they Seem” is the translated title of a new collection by artist Violeta Rivera opening Saturday, April 23, 6 p.m., at Chapala’s Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia. The center is located on Avenida Madero at Hidalgo, in the newly restored former town hall.

Kid art at CCA

Two gallery rooms at the Centro Cultural Ajijic will be dedicated to an exhibit of art works created by children, tying into the April 30 national celebration of the Día del Niño. The show’s opening reception is set for Saturday, April 23, 4 to 7 p.m.

Piano recital

The Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala finishes its musical program with the last piano recital Thursday, April 28, 7 p.m. in April.  Juan Pablo Garcìa performs music by Bach, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Prokofiev and Mexican composer Manuel Ponce. Free admittance.

Dance festival in Ajijic

A celebration of dance will be held Friday, April 29, 7 p.m., at Ajijic’s Centro Cultural as part of an extended program put together in conjunction with International Dance Day. 

Naked Stage

The Naked Stage Reader’s Theatre is presenting: “The Cocktail Hour” by A.R. Gurney, directed by Dick Yanko, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 29, 30, and May 1.
A winner of the Lucille Lortel Award as Best Off-Broadway Play and a long-run New York success, this witty, perceptive play blends mordant humor with moments of affecting poignancy. 

“It makes for a deliciously funny and also occasionally touching evening, as Gurney’s family sit around raking over old coals and settling old scores with a quite new and beguiling freshness.” —NY Post.

The Naked Stage is located at Hidalgo (carretera) 261 across from the Catholic the mountain side. The Dog House Bar is being run by animal welfare groups and all profits from the bar go to the animals. Any ticket profits for the readings are donated to Cruz Roja. 

LLT Playhouse series

The Lakeside Little Theatre offers two special HD screening presentations via its affiliation with London’s Royal Opera House and the National Theatre. April 30 and May 1 features The Royal Opera House’s presentation of Richard Eyre’s “La Traviatra,” with music by Giuseppe Verdi; and May 14 and 15, the National Theatre Live’s HD screening of “Everyman,” a new adaptation by Carol Ann Duffy with Chiwetel Ejiofor in the title role.

Show times are Saturday, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday: 3 p.m. Tickets, 200 pesos, are available at the LLT box office Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to noon or one hour before curtain. Seats can be reserved at time of purchase. The Angel Terrace Bar is open one hour before show time and during intermission.

New date for San      Cristóbal craft show

The previously announced exhibition of corn husk crafts in San Cristóbal Zapotitlán has been rescheduled for Sunday, May 1. The display of enchanting figurines, artificial flowers, baskets and other decorative items made by local women will be open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the town’s Centro Artesanal. The south shore village is located just off Highway 15, about four kilometers east of San Pedro Tesistán. Follow signs guiding visitors to craft center, about two blocks south of the highway.
