Ribera Arts Review - August 13, 2016

Art auction

Efren Gonzalez will wield the gavel at an art auction Friday, August 12, 4 p.m. at the Ajijic Plaza to help fund his skull mural project.

The auction offers collectors an excellent opportunity to pick up deals on works by local artists. Buyers can enjoy drinks and snacks while bidding on the selection of oils, watercolors, pastels, drawings, sculptures and more.

A 30-percent cut of the sales will go toward financing the production and installation of dozens of skull memorials that Gonzalez is making to compose his new Dead of the Dead ceramic mural.

LLT playhouse

The next screenings from the London’s Royal Opera House at the Lakeside Little Theatre’s Playhouse Series are on Saturday August 13, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, August 14, 3 p.m.

Both “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Pagliacci” will be featured at each showing.

Betrayal, lust, love, jealousy and murder abound in The Royal Opera’s pairing of these heart-rending classics, which are both conducted by Antonio Pappano and directed by Damiano Michieletto. Eva-Maria Westbroek and Aleksandrs Antonenko lead the world-class cast.

Cavalleria Rusticana is a tragedy of ancient codes and the illicit love of the peasant Turiddu for the married Lola. In a small southern Italian village where woman are objectified and men fight for their pride, the lovers’ betrayal ends in the ultimate duel.

Pagliacci is the story of an acting troupe: the hunchback clown Tonio, the murderous Canio and his adulterous wife Nedda. Taking to the stage in the local community hall, their performance quickly unravels as the imaginary and reality merge together and Canio descends into a jealous rage murdering Nedda in front of the audience.

Tickets, 200 pesos, are available at the LLT box office Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to noon or one hour before curtain. Seats can be reserved at time of purchase.

Naked Stage Theatre

Georgette Richmond directs “Glorious,” written by Peter Quilter, which runs August Friday, August 19 through Sunday, August 21. It is based on a true story of Florence Foster Jenkins, the worst singer in the world.

Set in 1940s New York, the play centers on Florence Foster Jenkins, an enthusiastic soprano who was known as “the first lady of the sliding scale” and warbled and screeched her way through performances to an audience who mostly fell about with laughter. This delusional and joyously happy woman paid little attention to her critics and surrounded herself with a circle of devoted friends who were almost as eccentric as she was.

The Naked Stage Readers Theatre is located at Hidalgo 261 in Riberas del Pilar. Box office opens 3:15 p.m. and the show begins at 4 p.m.

The Dog House bar serves up cocktails, beer and soft drinks, and benefits local animal shelters.

Chapala crafts expo

A cornucopia of locally produced arts and crafts will be up for grabs at the summer run of the Expo Chapala Artesenal for Friday, August 19 through Sunday, August 21.  Around 50 exhibition booths will be set up along the north-south leg of the Chapala Malecon adjacent to Avenida Madero, open to the public daily 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Modern Dance

The Sincronico Modern Arts Festival in Chapala is hosting a presentation by the renowned Rafael Carlín Contemporary Dance Company from Guadalajara at the Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia in Chapala on Friday, August 19. The dancers will perform their “Rituales” choreography, which has received rave reviews at various festivals throughout the region. Admission is 80 pesos.

Mark Twain

The Lakeside Little Theatre presents “Mark Twain, Uncensored” written by Ed Tasca — who also has the title role — and directed by Barbara Clippinger, Tuesday August 23 through Sunday, August 28.

Tasca has purposely attempted to create a realistic Mark Twain, noting little-known events from the great author’s life, and including whimsical interruptions from real-life associates and Twain’s fictional characters to give his lecture presentation a rich theatrical scope. The result is a memoir of Twain, mostly invention, but derived from the writer’s biography, favorite subjects and irritants. Enriched by singing and dancing preludes, the project snagged Tasca’s attention and enthusiasm because of its huge challenge.

Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. evenings and 3 p.m. for Sunday’s matinee. Tickets can be purchased at the LLT Box Office, 10 a.m. to noon, Wednesdays and Thursdays and the same hours every day during the show, except Sunday.
