People with personality

Every so often some of us end up swapping stories about Lake Chapala when the unusual and interesting folks here were really characters and not just caricatures.

It is a favorite pastime and we’re just old enough to have several favorite catch phrases that send us into gales of laughter as one thought triggers the memory of an old friend and that causes the flashback of an entire relationship. 

I don’t think Ajijic has ever been the kind of place that attracted church ladies in floral dresses. Don’t get me wrong. There’s been lots of really interesting women. Take Iona Kupiec, for instance. By the time some of us arrived at lakeside in the early 1990s, Iona had already been here 30 years. 

When Iona, a southern maiden lady, retired from teaching art and drama in her native Louisiana, she got the trunks she’d used to carry her things home from college down from the attic and packed up her lounging gowns, sketch books and fox collar and moved to Lake Chapala.
