Oscar fever
The American Society in Guadalajara (Amsoc) is hosting an Oscar Nominee Preview Festival on Sundays, February 10 and February 17, from 1-5 p.m.
The event will be hosted ahead of the Academy Awards ceremony which takes place on Sunday, February 24.
On Sunday, February 10, the society will be showing “Argo,” nominated for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor (Alan Arkin). The following Sunday will feature a screening of “Silver Linings Playbook,” nominated for Best Picture and all four Oscar acting awards.
The movies will be displayed in English with Spanish subtitles. All are invited to come along from 1 p.m. with the movies starting at 2 p.m. A donation of 20 pesos is requested. which includes popcorn and a post-screening discussion. There will also be a cash bar.
As the Oscars go live on February 24, Amsoc will be hosting its 3rd Annual Oscar Party.
The awards ceremony starts at 7:30 p.m. A donation of 60 pesos is required, which includes pizza, popcorn and candy. Attendees are encouraged to bring appetizers, which will be voted for in a prize-winning contest. The doors open at 5 p.m. for “Red Carpet” coverage; there will also be a cash bar.

Thursday concerts
The Banda Sinfonica de Zapopan, directed by Javier Rosas Espinoza, will give three “open-air” concerts (Sinfonias Callejeros) each Thursday during the rest of February. On February 14 (Dia del Amor y la Amistad), the band will be on the Andador 20 de Noviembre, outside the Museo de Arte de Zapopan (MAZ) at 5 p.m. At the same time on February 21, they will perform at the famous Zapopan Arch (arco de ingreso), where Av. Avila Camacho meets Av. Americas. On Thursday, February 28, 7 p.m., the band plays at Zapopan city hall (Presidencia Municipal).
This 30-member band performs for free each Sunday, 5 p.m. at the Chapalita Glorieta (Av. Guadalupe and San Ignacio) art market.
Birthday
This year, Guadalajara will take festivities marking its foundation 471 years ago out to the people. Rather than hold all the events in the historic center, city hall has decided to host exhibitions, concerts, conferences and cultural activities in diverse corners of the municipality, between February 8 and 17.
On the actual day of the city’s foundation, Thursday, February 14, all are welcome to hear the traditional singing of “Las Mañanitas” in the Palacio Municipal at 8 a.m., followed by cultural events throughout the day dispersed around the main downtown plazas.
On Sunday, February 10, from 10 a.m., kids can enjoy free performances in the Guadalajara Zoo car park by Patita de Perro, Yucatán a go-go and Luis Delgadillo.
Fat Tuesday
Tonala will host a Fat Tuesday festival on Tuesday, February 12 in the town center, culminating with dance groups performing in the main Plaza Cihualpilli at 8 p.m. Look out for Tonala’s take on the Danza de los Viejitos (Dance of the Old Men), which is usually considered a traditional dance from Michoacan.
Recital
The Martes Musicales recital series continues Tuesday, February 12, 8 p.m., with Sergio Hernandez on piano, accompanied by renowned local tenor Arturo Valencia, interpreting pieces by Manuel M. Ponce, Maria Grever, Agustin Lara, Esparza Oteo, Paolo Tosti and Carlos Gustavino.
The free concerts are held at Ex Convento del Carmen (Av. Juarez 635, one block from Calz. Federalismo).
