City Living - June 6, 2014

Learn about many of Jalisco’s 126 municipalities at a two-day, open-air expo/fair to be held in the esplanade in front of the Instituto Cultural Cabañas on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8.

Municipalities will set up stands to showcase their products, arts, crafts, products, cuisine and attractions. There will be art workshops and loteria for the kids and performances by regional folk dance troupes from 18 municipalities, including Sayula, Cocula, Tamazula, El Limon and Tala, among others.

Stands open at 10 a.m. on Saturday; the dancing is scheduled from 2-6:30 p.m. A fashion parade and typical costume contest is planned at 6:30 p.m., while the Voces Jalisco choir and a mariachi band play from 7:15-9:30 p.m.

The stands will remain up through Sunday, when further events are planned.

The expo is promoted by YoSoyJalisco.com and the National Commission for Culture (Conaculta).

Dog Park opens

Zapopan opens its first park for pets, Red Parque Caninos, this Sunday in Colonia Tabachines. The park includes areas for dogs to run with their owners, learn skills and a fenced area with five different games. The Club Canino Tabachines was instrumental in helping design the park. Another ten canine parks are planned in the municipality, although no timetable is set for their opening.

Amsoc

Unfortunately, the American Society (Amsoc) Mother’s Day luncheon was canceled last month due to insufficient reservations. The society decided to celebrate both moms and pops at a single lunch to be held on Thursday, June 13, from noon.

The menu will feature turkey or beef meatloaf with scalloped potatoes and salad, with brownie strawberry shortcake for dessert. There will be a 50-50 raffle with great prizes. The cost is 130 pesos.

Amsoc Cooking Club

The “Tastes of Amsoc” Cooking Club meets on Tuesday, June 10, with set-up slated for 11:30 a.m.

There are two categories: Italian entrees in Category A, and pies and tarts in Category B. The lunch is served from noon to 1:30 p.m. and clean-up is from 1:30-2 p.m.

Street football tourney

Some 500 children and youth participated in last week’s Sixth Annual Street Football Tournament sponsored by MAMA A.C. in the city’s Plaza de Liberacion. The 25-year-old organization, which takes kids off the street and gives them a place to eat, rest, learn and grow, registered 67 teams from 18 organizations working with children and young adults with social problems. Winners of the event will play in a national competition.
