Local English-language students benefit as ‘100,000 Strong’ program gathers pace

U.S. Consul General in Guadalajara Tanya Anderson (left) joins the ten lucky young men and women who won scholarships to study English for one year at the Instituto Cultural Mexicano Norteamericano.

The winners had all expressed an  interest in studying in the United States but did not have the required English skills.

The grants were offered as part of Barack Obama’s 100,000 Strong in the Americas  initiative, which seeks to increase the number of U.S. students studying in Latin America by 2020 to 100,000, and Latin American students studying in the United States to the same number.

The consulate received 529 applications for the scholarships, which cover tuition fees at the Guadalajara institute.

The U.S. State Department says the 100,000 Strong will “deepen relationships across the hemisphere, enabling young people to understand and navigate the rich tapestry of shared values and culture and lead the process of greater commercial and social integration key to our region’s long term security and prosperity.”

During their year of English study, the students will receive guidance from an assessor from EducationUSA, located in the institute, regarding their future studies in the United States.
