Three Sunrise Club Rotarians obtain prestigious recognition

The newly formed Chapala Sunrise Rotary Club presented three of its members with the honor of becoming a Paul Harris Fellow at the club’s August 14 meeting at the Hotel MonteCarlo’s Salon Verde in Chapala.

Past Paul Harris members and officers John Gonzales (President) and Sandra Loridans (Membership) handed over the award to Shelia Paull, Barbara Wilson and Bill Wilson, who have demonstrated Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self” for many years.

Paull is the new club’s president-elect, while Barbara Wilson is chairman of the Rotary Foundation committee, and Bill Wilson is the club’s administrator.  All three have held offices and been active in other Rotary clubs.

According to Chapala Sunrise Rotary President Gonzales, a Paul Harris Fellow is awarded to Rotarians who have donations totaling 1,000 dollars contributed in their name to the Rotary Foundation. “The award is named for Paul P. Harris, founder of Rotary international, whose intention was to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth,”  Gonzales said.

Most recently the new Chapala Sunrise Rotary Club has donated a stove and ovens to Love in Action children’s shelter, agreed to sponsor a youth soccer team for at-risk children in San Juan Cosala; made a contribution to NeedlePushers to assist their program of providing sweaters at Christmas to local children, and supported a youth tennis program in Chapala.

Currently the club is preparing preparing a “Mothers March to End Polio Now” in Chapala on October 24, World Polio Day, at 10 a.m., beginning at the Chapala malecon, followed by an End Polio Now dinner that evening at the Hotel MonteCarlo.   Their big fundraiser will be an International Women’s Day Golf Tournament on March 7, 2015.
