Stellar CASA member ends year with 6th Bing Award

Mary Ann Waite walked away from the  December 15 annual holiday party and December monthly competition of the Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA) with top honors and the Bing Award – her sixth in eight years of membership. 

Waite entered her Cranberry Orange Cheesecake with Crème Anglaise Sauce in the holiday dessert category. She also took the vote for best presentation in her category. The Bing Award is given to members who garner three first place titles in a calendar year. 

CASA members Kenee Campo, Pam Ladd and Ginger Perkins served as judges for the December competition. 

Other winners in the dessert category included Catherine Suter’s Hazelnut Almond Dacquoise in second place, with Collette Clavadetscher’s Banoffee Pie and Anna Sanchez’s Tres Leche Cake garnering a third-place tie. 

Carole Wolff’s Bacon Baklava took first place in the holiday botanas category. Second went to LuzMa Grande’s Cheese Ball with Smoked Oysters, and third to Monique Grossman’s Cream Puffs with Crevette and Cheese Filling. Carole Wolff and John Comando tied for best presentation in this category. 

The People’s Choice Awards went to Carole Wolff and to Catherine Suter.  

CASA’s 2015 Board of Directors includes President Margaret Ancira, Vice President Beth Cathcart, Secretary Rick Feldmann and Treasurer Leslie Yanko.  The first meeting and competition of 2015 will be held at Min Wah Restaurant on Monday, January 19, 4 p.m. The two categories will be Soup, Stew and Chili and Cupcakes.
