With Christmas and New Year’s hoopla now behind them, youngsters all over Mexico restlessly await the next big chapter of the holiday season--the celebration of Dia de Reyes (Three Kings Day).
January 6, rather than Christmas Day, is the accustomed date for children to wake up and find presents brought by mysterious overnight visitors. They are raised in the belief that Los Reyes Magos (Magi) come while they sleep to deliver toys and holiday treats, just as they carried precious gifts to honor the Baby Jesus.
Local kids will enjoy a special thrill this coming Wednesday when the Wisemen make appearances at Kings Day celebrations scheduled in Chapala and Ajijic.
Gaspar, Melchior and Balthazar will take a late afternoon spin through the streets of Ajijic to spread good cheer and toss out treats to eager youngsters waiting along the way. The Kings will finish their run at the central plaza around 6 p.m. where town administrator Hector España will host a big community bash, with piñata-smashing, steaming platters of pozole and entertainment for all comers, young and old alike.
Generous folks who wish to pitch in support ahead of time are asked to stop by Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57, to drop off contributions of empty or filled piñatas, extra wrapped candies and seasonal fruits.
The Reyes Magos are also expected to roll into Chapala around sundown to parade along Avenida Madero to the steps of San Francisco Church. They will hand out candies and toys to crowds of little nippers standing by to greet them.
The celebration continues outside the church where the public is welcome to share cutting and nibbling dozens of Rosca de Reyes pastries set out side-by-side to form a giant oblong ring.
