Chapala rustles up action-packed stock show

Chapala’s second annual Expo Ganadera livestock show kicks into action Friday, April 24 with a packed program of activities and entertainment spectacles set to run through Monday, May 4 on the grounds of the J. González Gallo Lienzo Charro, located on Avenida Madero, opposite the Pemex service station.

The 11-day shindig opens Friday evening with a colorful equestrian, to depart from the Lienzo gates around 6 p.m. for a full loop along the main thoroughfare. Admission to the fairgrounds will be free of charge on that day, allowing visitors to meander through the exhibition of horses, cattle, sheep and other farm animals, turn small fries free in the petting farm, hop on mechanical rides and savor country-style vittles at assorted food stalls.

The gate price on subsequent dates is 30 pesos for adults and half-price for children, including entry to entertainment events going on inside the arena. Hours for the general public are 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., with a morning schedule set aside for free school field trips.

Next Saturday’s program features a Guerra de Bandas with five musical troupes playing back to back, plus a presentation of caballos bailadores (dancing horses).  Sunday will bring a bull-riding jaripeo, jazzed up by local music-makers Banda San Miguel, Banda Brisas del Lago and Banda M Grande.
