The speaker for Monday, June 15 meeting of the Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA) was Ruthie Baker, an accomplished confectioner. Baker now sells her wares in Mostly Chocolate on Colon in Ajijic.
Baker has been creating specialty cakes, cookies and fancy chocolates for over 14 years. This very generous baker implemented a dental health care program at Hope House for Boys and donates all of her profits to that program.
The first-place winner in the June savory brunch main dish competition was Catherine Suter’s Mediterranean tart. Amy Friend’s whitefish terrine with salmon roe was a trifecta winner as it took second place, the presentation prize and the people’s choice award. Rick Feldmann placed third with his wild Alaskan salmon cakes with sauce remoulade.
In the cakes and tortes category, the winners were: Margaret Ancira’s coconut soak cake in first place and Collette Clavadatscher’s carrot cake in second place. Mary Ann Waite’s third place coffee baba au rhum cake also garnered a people’s choice award as well as the presentation award in this category.
Judging the competition were Omar Castro, Ed Knudson and Ruben Olivares.
The next CASA meeting is on Monday July 20, 4 p.m. in Restaurant La Mision. The categories will be poultry or cookies and bars.
