Local kids bring Ajijic legend to the stage

The Legend of Queen Xochitl Michi-Cihualli, a multi-media theatrical spectacle based on local oral legend, comes to the stage of the Auditorio de la Ribera Wednesday, October 7, 7 p.m.

Adapted from a book by Ajijic artist Antonio Lopez Vega, the stage version of the legend tells of the founding of Axixik – “the place where water is born.” The production is the brain child of Lopez Vega and members of Ajijic’s Cochera Cultural, a collective that connects local youth with professional mentors, as well as honor and preserve both pre- and post-Hispanic Lakeside history and culture.

“This performance is the result of the summer’s theater prop workshops, choreography taught by Ce-Ollin-a troupe from Chiapas specializing in pre-Hispanic dance and indigenous instrumental music and puppeteering lessons,” says program director Jennifer Stanley. “Now the kids and their Mexican mentors will bring Xochitl Michi’s legend alive against a back-drop of visuals, complete with English subtitles.”

As a prelude to the show, a short program of pre-Hispanic music will be presented on the auditorium patio, 6:30 p.m. A live auction will be held during intermission, accompanied by a complementary glass of wine and finger foods.  Additional beverages will be available for purchase and art and food venders will be on site.  Following the intermission the audience will be treated to guest appearances by the Ce-Ollin dance troupe and the Tribu band.

Advance tickets at 200 pesos are on sale at the auditorium box office and Diane Pearl Colecciones. Admission at the door will cost 250 pesos.

Proceeds from the event and auction will go toward future mentorship for youth programming by Cochera Cultura and support for the third annual Festival Cultural Sangre Viva, to be held October 9-11 at the Ajijic plaza.
