Cooks serve up Italian treats

Cooking aficionados at lakeside pulled out all the stops for the competition held during the October meeting of the Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA).

The contest pitted members in their choice of categories: Italian main course or Italian desserts.  Three women knowledgeable in Italian cuisine – Ilona Maria de Borhegyi, Barbara Gross and Donna Blackburn – found judging the many entries a difficult task, as evidenced by the number of ties awarded this month.

Winners in the main course category included Rick Feldmann’s Ravioli con osso buco ragu e formaggio Pecorino Romano. This entry earned him the presentation award, first place and completed his requirements for a Bing award.

Taking second place in the main course category was George Lindahl’s Sicilian braciole, while the judges awarded a tie for third place to Monica Grossman’s Chicken scallopini and Judith Greenberg’s Italian meatballs. Grossman also won the People’s Choice vote.

Marina Benz swept through the Italian dessert category winning first place, the presentation award, the People’s Choice Vote and qualifying for a Bing award with her Tony Soprano’s obsession.

The judges gave the second place dessert nod to Michele Lococo’s Almond meringues with marscarpone and Morello chocolate truffles. In a third place were Carole Wolff’s Blueberry ricotta squares and Wendy Hamblin’s Italian crème layer cake.

The two categories selected for the competition at the CASA meeting at La Mision on Monday, November 9 are comfort foods and pies, tarts and cobblers.  The meeting begins at 4 p.m.
