Lakeside churches plan special holiday events

Chanukah celebration

The local community is encouraged to join in the Sunday, December 6, 3 p.m. celebration of the lighting of the first candle on the menorah during the eight-day observance of Chanukah.

The event organized by the Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation will include traditional food, games and fun. Non-members are encouraged to join in the festivities. Virgin of Guadalupe

The English-speaking congregation of San Andres Catholic Church will meet to celebrate the feast of Nuestra Señora la Virgen de Guadalupe on Saturday, December 12, 9 a.m. 

Catholics in other North American countries are accustomed to observing a day of holy obligation on December 8, the feast of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception. In Mexico that feast is replaced by that of Mary as she appeared in Mexico City on December 12, 1531. 

Posada in San Juan Tecomatlan 

The Little Chapel by the Lake and Christ Church join to host an annual posada for children in San Juan Tecomatlan on Sunday, December 13, 1 p.m. Those attending will car pool from the church at 12:15 p.m. For information, contact Wendy at (376) 763-5139, or Belva at (376) 766-2538. 

Christmas Extravaganza

Lake Chapala Baptist Church Musical Director Kina Dutro is finalizing plans for the church’s seasonal event. The Wednesday, December 16, 6 p.m. Christmas Extravaganza will be a fun-filled evening with choir numbers, dramas, sing-along music, solos and instrumentals by the participants of all ages. 

Following the program will be a complimentary soup dinner. The Lake Chapala Baptist Church is at Sta. Margarita 147 in Riberas del Pilar. For directions or information, call (376) 765-2925.

Christmas Caroling

The Lakeside Carolers, members of Christ Church Episcopal and the Little Chapel by the Lake, are singing Christmas carols at five assisted care facilities on Thursday, December 17 and Saturday, December 19. 

The group will visit Ohana Assisted Living Home in San Juan Cosala on Thursday, December 17, noon to 4:30 p.m. If you would like to take part, call Kay Borkowski before Thursday, December 10 at (376) 766-2495.
