Weekly Worship - January 30, 2016

St. Andrew’s Anglican

Words are powerful. They can communicate or deceive, clarify or confuse, amuse or anger.

Jesus’s words sometimes enraptured His hearers, and at other times enraged them. This week at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Fr. Winston Welty’s sermon, “God in Our Mouths,” reflects on how people of faith are charged with using words in ways that faithfully communicate the reality of God.

Worship begins Sunday, January 31, 10 a.m., the children’s bilingual Sunday School is at 9:45 a.m., and “Coffee Hour” in the Garden follows the worship service.

On the last Sunday of each month, donations provide lunches for Mezcala schoolchildren. And every Sunday, the feeding program supported by St. Andrew’s welcomes donations of non-perishable food items, which can be left in the baskets by the church doors.

St. Andrew’s is at Calle San Lucas 19, a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Presbyterians

Lakeside Presbyterian Church invites everyone to an open house and the dedication of their new worship facility, at San Jorge 250 in Riberas del Pilar, Sunday, January 31. The event is free and open to the public.

Tours will be given from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. as well a short slide presentation chronicling the before and after of the church. A “time capsule” will be placed in a prepared location in the new church.

The dedication ceremony is scheduled at 11 a.m. Food by local restaurants will be on hand, as well as entertainment and activities for children. For more information, call (376) 106-0853.

Unitarian Universalists

Lynn Cleek’s sermon on Sunday, January 31 is entitled “How Organized Are We for Health Emergencies and End of Life Issues?”

Cleek takes a look at emergency and end of life planning issues and how the UU fellowship can be supportive. Pixie Frayer leads the service.

The Unitarian Universalists have an enhanced personal sound system to help those with hearing issues during their Sunday services.  Attendees may use headphones or ear buds connected to an FM radio or FM capable cell phone.

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalists are an English-speaking, lay-led fellowship that meets every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on the west side of Ajijic in Plaza de la Ribera, Rio Bravo 10A, in a wheelchair-accessible facility.

New Hope Christian

The congregation of New Hope Christian Fellowship will continue with its custom of “Lay Sunday” on January 31.

Explains Pastor Gene Raymer: “Our congregation is blessed with several individuals capable of bringing God’s message to us. On fifth Sundays, we invite one of these individuals to do just that. This Sunday it will be Bob Nipper with the message ‘Where the Spirit of the Lord Goes.’ Other segments of the service will remain the same with Children’s Church, hymns and prayers.”

A refreshment period precedes the 11 a.m. service and many in the congregation continue the fellowship after the service with a meal at a local restaurant. The location of the lunch changes from week to week.

New Hope Christian Fellowship is a non-denominational congregation seeking to follow the spiritual model set by the first century Christians. The group is currently meeting in the home of the association president, four blocks south of the new Pemex in Riberas. For exact directions or further information, contact the pastor at 376-766-3435.

Lake Chapala Baptist

Brother Bob Hendrick preaches this week that communication can be complicated.

He says, “To say something and have it heard like you intended can be difficult. Some would not consider something like, ‘You sure don’t sweat much for someone your size,’ a compliment, even if it were sincerely intended to be one. Folks in love find that ways to communicate love are many and varied and that many and varied ways are required. The Letter to the Hebrews, our next series, begins by pointing out that God has used many ways to communicate his message to people that he loves. His latest and most explicit way was through his Son, Jesus. As we study Hebrews, we will try to hear what God has to say to us.”

Attend the service at the Lake Chapala Baptist Church on Sunday, January 31, 11 a.m. The church is at Santa Margarita 179 in Riberas del Pilar.

Christ Church

Christ Church Episcopal will observe the Fourth Sunday after Epiphany by celebrating the Holy Eucharist, Rite II (in Spanish) at La Sagrada Familia (The Holy Family) Mission in Mazamitla on January 31.  Fr. Danny Borkowski will preside and preach, with an interpreter.

Christ Church members and friends will take food for sharing after the noon service. The group will leave in convoy from Farmacia Guadalajara in Ajijic at 9:15 a.m.

There will be no service for Christ Church at the Little Chapel by the Lake this Sunday.  The Tuesday Bible Study continues the study of John’s Gospel.

San Andres English

Fr. Basil G. Royston, D. Min. will give the homily on “Loving in the Truth” Sunday, January 31, 9 a.m. at the English-language Mass held at San Andres Catholic Church in Ajijic.

He says: “The Christian call to love is inseparably connected to truth; to lead ourselves and others to truth is a profound form of loving.”

San Andres is located at the corner of Ramon Corona and Parroquia, one block from the Ajijic main plaza.
