Gran Kermes, fun-filled family fair to benefit the Programa Pro Niños Incapacitados del Lago (Pro-Niños), will be held Sunday, April 17, at Chapala’s Cristiania Park, with unprecedented backing from the Mexican community at large.
Pro-Niños is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization that helps low-income Mexican families who require financial assistance in providing medical care for children afflicted with serious disabilities or life threatening illnesses.
The families put their heart and soul into organizing the biannual Kermes fund-raisers as a way of giving back for the support they receive from the program. This time around the event is coming together with full cooperation from the municipal government, along with the Juan Manuel Duran Barajas Foundation, several local businesses and a big bill of entertainment talents.
The fair hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with admission to the grounds set at five pesos per head. There will be great variety of homemade Mexican food and cool liquid refreshments available for sale, a bazaar offering a treasure trove of second-hand bargains, games and recreational activities for kids and an on-going live show featuring clowns, dance troupes and musical groups.
Pro-Niños currently aids around 180 youngsters, while more than a dozen others are registered on the waiting list. Expenses run at around three million pesos, with 96 percent going directly to beneficiaries. Deserving patients are identified through clinics operating in Chapala. Ajijic and Jocotepec.
