Lake’s health affects tourism

Keeping Lake Chapala healthy is an essential component to maintaining a vibrant tourist trade, declared Chapala city councilor Alberto Alcantar Medeles in addressing members of the Jalisco legislative commission on tourism a recent meeting with local officials from the state’s southeast region.

“Investors are fearful of putting a stake in the area due to uncertainties about the quantity and quality of the lake’s waters,” Alcantar told commission chair Juan Carlos Anguiano.

Anguiano fully concurred saying, “We are concerned about the lake and should focus greater attention on safeguarding its conditions.”

Alcantar Medeles currently heads Chapala’s own tourism commission. He is also the son of former Chapala mayor Alberto Alcantar Beltrán who became an ardent lake conservationist during his 1998-2000 term of office.

Public security was another key issue discussed during the gathering. Anguiano spoke in favor of creating specialized tourist police forces.
