Lakeside Progressives
The next meeting of the Lakeside Progressives will be on Tuesday, July 8, 4 p.m. in the Peacock Garden Restaurant in Ajijic.
Last month a book report of “Beyond Outrage” by former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich was followed by group discussion of income inequality, identified by the group as one of the three major issues facing the United States. Discussion continues at the July meeting based on the question, “What can we do about it?”
Also on the agenda is the possible Lakeside Progressives website. The group’s Facebook page is Lakeside Progressives. Toastmasters Club
Outgoing President Tim Schubert of the Lakeside Bilingual Toastmasters Club will be in Leon on July 5 receiving training in preparation for becoming the governor of Area 34.
The Tuesday, July 15 meeting will be an English session and the one on Tuesday, July 22 will be held in Spanish. By alternating the languages at meetings, native speakers of both English and Spanish have the opportunity to improve both speaking and comprehension skills in the other language.
The Toastmasters will install the new slate of officers at the regular August 22 meeting. The club meets on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at Loyola Institute of Chapala, on Allen Lloyd 151, in San Antonio Tlayacapan. LCS Summer Films
The Lake Chapala Society 2014 Summer Film Festival will show the season’s second film in the Neill James Sala on Thursday, July 10, 1 p.m. The film shown will be “Woodrow Wilson,” the story of the life of the 28th president of the United States.
Spanish Classes
The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) is sponsoring the July 7 through August 23 summer session of Warren G. Hardy Spanish Classes. The first meetings will be held at the LCS campus on July 7.
Prospective students can sign up under the blue umbrella at the LCS campus between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 5. Peter Donaldson and Lulu will be on hand to help determine the proper level for each student. Others can attend the first class and join at that time. LCS Meeting on Chronic Illness
Lakeside residents suffering from chronic degenerative illnesses, living with pain and unable to participate in an active lifestyle are the focus of a talk by Dr. Carlos Alvirde at the Lake Chapala Society, Thursday, July 10, 10:30 a.m.
During the meeting he will discuss a treatment for auto-immune illnesses that strengthens the immune system and will share information about how the therapy works and share results that have been achieved during the past 20 years. He’ll also introduce Dr. Richard Heredia, the local doctor who has been trained to administer the therapy.
Single Travels
We Can Travel Together is a new organization still in the formative stage. The group’s purpose is not to sponsor group tours, but to allow single women to find compatible women with whom to share trips, cruises and travels.
The concept for the group grew from the discussion following Ann Lewis’ Open Circle talk about her solo world adventures. During planned meetings women will discuss the process of making their own travel plans and destinations. They will compare notes on cruises taken, places to stay and share other helpful tips.

LCS Constantly Improving
Just in time for the popular annual Lake Chapala Society Can-Am Day on Wednesday, July 2, the cadre of volunteer gardeners at the society have been cleaning, thinning and replanting to improve the LCS gardens.
The gardening team is directed by Mauricio, the organization’s only fulltime gardener and a volunteer team headed by Natalie Neal.
Bryon Cranston has been involved in recent LSC improvements. He’s just finished the lighting installation in the Neill James Library and a number of other repairs to improve several of the buildings. The bathroom adjoining the Café has been remodeled with commercial grade fixtures and is now handicapped accessible. Future plans include adding handicapped access to other areas of the grounds as they are updated.
Open Circle
Lakeside resident Hans Krauklis is slated as the 10:30 a.m. featured speaker at the Sunday, July 6 meeting of Open Circle. He will present “Climate Change – An Update,” and some of the latest information to the group at the conclusion of the 30-minute coffee, tea and sandwich bite fellowship in the rear patio of the Lake Chapala Society.
CNA Corporation, the prominent Arlington, Virginia U.S. Military think tank published a May update on climate change urging policy makers around the world to take immediate meaningful action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to prepare for the ever more extreme and frequent weather and climate events including the century floods, droughts, and super storms.
Krauklis also will relay CNA warnings of social, economic, political and possible military consequences of accelerating climate change and expected climate changes in Mexico, more specifically the Lake Chapala area.
A trade and industrial economist, Krauklis worked for the Canadian government until moving to Lakeside nearly five years ago. His areas of special interest are in the fields of economics and the relationship with renewable energy. He has first-hand experience with solar and wind power and their social and ecological effects.
Heart of Awareness
The Heart of Awareness Buddhist Community meets in Ajijic for meditation and dharma teachings at 4:30 p.m. each Wednesday at Encarnation Rosas 9. The subject of the July 9 dharma talk is Thich Nhat Hanh’s “Fourteen Mindfulness Trainings.”
Heart of Awareness is a non-sectarian Buddhist practice community grounded in the original teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Theravada/Vipassana tradition. Membership is open and includes people with Zen, Tibetan, and Shambhala backgrounds as well as people who have no prior experience with meditation. Unitarian Universalist
The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meeting on Sunday, July 6, 10:30 a.m. will feature Lori Fjelsted presenting “El Agua Nos Une” (“The Water Binds Us”).

St. Andrew’s Anglican
Rev. Winston Welty is returning to the pulpit of St. Andrew’s this week and has chosen for the topic of his sermon, “The Cost of Discipleship.”
The 10 a.m. worship service is usually followed by a coffee and fellowship time. This week the congregation is hosting a potluck brunch to welcome Father Welty and Mary Welty in place of the usual coffee hour — all are welcome. St. Andrew’s is located at Calle San Lucas 19, just a block off the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.
Christ Church
Christ Church Lakeside will celebrate the Holy Eucharist Rite II, at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, July 6 in The Little Chapel by the Lake, carretera 10 in Chula Vista. The theme of Father Danny Borkowski’s message is “Wisdom,” based on Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30.
The congregations of Christ Church and The Little Chapel by the Lake enjoy a common coffee fellowship time between their services from about 10:35 until 11:15 a.m. The first Sunday of each month the congregations of Christ Church and The Little Chapel by the Lake share a potluck luncheon after the Little Chapel’s 11:15 a,m. service. This month the event’s theme is Food, Food, Food!
Deacon Rob Wells is leading Bible study at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays in the Fellowship Hall of The Little Chapel by the Lake. Sessions last about one hour. Wells uses the Jerusalem Bible as the main source for the group which is currently studying the Gospel of Mark .
Lakeside Presbyterian
In recent weeks the sermons at Lakeside Presbyterian have been based upon a variety of the 150 Psalms. These Biblical passages, many of which are attributed to King David, were written to be sung in praise. Pastor Ross Arnold will use Psalm 145 as his text for the 10 a.m. Sunday, July 6 sermon which he has entitled “Pass it On.” This psalm is an acrostic poem, a Hebrew poem in which each line begins with the letters of the Hebrew alphabet in regular order.
Following the service, the congregation gathers in the garden for refreshments and fellowship.
