Laguna Chapalac – April 4, 2015

LCS Seminars

The Tuesday April 7, noon seminar will be chaired by Ron Mullenaux. The meeting is reserved for Lake Chapala Society (LCS) members only and features a video talk by political scientist Parag Khanna titled “Mapping the future of countries.” Many people think the lines on the map no longer matter, but in his talk Khanna proves that they do. Using maps of the past and present, he explains the root causes of border conflicts worldwide and proposes simple yet cunning solutions for each.

The Tuesday, April 7 Neill James Lecture at 2 p.m. in the LCS Sala is open to the public. Dr. John Milton’s video lecture is titled “‘Are We Rational?” The session will briefly examine some of the effects of cognitive biases as they affect our decisions and attitudes toward our political and judicial systems, our financial and medical health, and our personal relationships. Milton has worked for the last 20 years, mainly in Asia, in the development of natural language processing systems.

Rib Rodeo

American Legion Post 7 is hosting a Rib Rodeo on Wednesday, April 15. The cocktail hour begins at 3 p.m. and dinner is served from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The menu includes slow cooked and grilled ribs or pulled pork along with coleslaw, baked beans and that old-time, Southern favorite, sweet potato pie.

Brit Gathering

Sharon Sibson will host the first British gathering at her home in Riberas del Pilar on Saturday, April 25. 2 p.m. While living in Guadalajara, she hosted similar events there to allow Brits an opportunity to relax and have an opportunity to socialize.

The group is not intended to replace the British Club’s regular meeting on the first Saturday of each month at Manix.

These events will be more social and include the opportunity for attendees to being a dish to share and a preferred beverage. Non-British spouses and partners are very welcome, as are those with a British connection of some sort.

For directions and to RSVP, contact Sibson at (376) 106-2179, or (33) 1527-0980.

Special Children

Growing sales and profits at the Casi Nuevo (Like New) Bazaar in Riberas del Pilar during the past six months demonstrate the success of the store which supports the School for Special Children.

To keep that chain of success going the bazaar needs help from the community. As those heading back north clean out closets and cupboard preparing to pack for the trip can drop unneeded “like new” clothing and household items at the bazaar. Not going north? Volunteers are needed to help in the store on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Presbyterian Church

The congregation of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church have moved into their new building at San Jorge 250, two blocks south of Mom’s Deli.

On Sunday, April 5 the congregation will conduct an Easter Celebration Service at 10 a.m. Pastor Arnold Ross says, “On this Easter day of all days, we celebrate the Risen Christ, who proved by his resurrection from the dead that he had defeated death and truly was Savior and Lord.”

Following the bilingual service in which both LPC’s English- and Spanish-language congregations will participate, there will be a time of fellowship and refreshment.

Little Chapel

Members of the Little Chapel by the Lake will share a joint Sunrise Easter Service with the congregation of Christ Church Lakeside on Easter Sunday, April 5 at the home of Little Chapel member H.R. Thornton.

A baptismal service will be held at the conclusion of the worship period. “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Christ’s resurrection than with the symbolic resurrection of a new believer,” says Rev. Gene Raymer.

All attendees at the sunrise service will be treated to breakfast at a local restaurant following the service. The Little Chapel by the Lake is located on the mountain side of the Carretera just east of the golf course in Chula Vista.
