Firemen’s Breakfast

The lakeside Fireside Assistance Group is hosting a Bomberos Pancake Breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, June 20 at the firehouse on the Libremiento. This assistance group is made up of local supporters who continue to work with north-of-the-border organizations to gather used firefighting uniforms and equipment for the local crew. This breakfast event is an opportunity to help out and to meet the lakeside firefighters.

Jamm Band

Bryon Cranston noticed that the Summer Solstice has not been getting enough attention down here and he decided to do something about it!  So, to celebrate he made arrangements for the Jamm Band to play at Maria Isabel Restaurant on the evening of Sunday, June 21.

Three large tables are reserved around the dance floor, while the rest of the area is open to first come first serve. The music will start just after 7 p.m. It might be a good idea to be at the restaurant no later than 6 p.m. if you are planning to have dinner.

If you like old time rock ‘n roll and like to dance, this is for you.

Caregiver’s Workshop

Memory Minders, a volunteer group serving lakeside residents affected by memory loss or dementia, next week hosts Martha Benavides, who give a presentation on a holistic approach for caring for the elderly.

The two-hour worship begins at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23 and takes attendees through the concept of caring for the whole person – the body, mind and spirit.

Those wishing to attend should bring an exercise mat or towel, as the class begins with light exercise. They should RSVP to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. so that the planners have an accurate count. The workshop will be held at La Valentina Care Home in La Cristina. Carpooling is being arranged.

Memory Minders was founded by Karin Miles. On the advisory board are Interim Director Lila Wells; Co-Founder and Volunteer Coordinator Amara Brouwers; Supervising Counselor Valerie Rhoda; Caregiver Liaison Keith Coates; and Secretary Tish Wagoner. Dr. Gabriel Varela is the consulting physician.

Hope House Dinner

A fundraiser for Hope House, the home for boys in Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, is scheduled for Saturday, June 27, 5 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Baptist Church at Santa Margarita 147 in Riberas del Pilar.

Dr. Antonio Pinto is cooking a typical Mexican dinner that will include cochinita pibil, refried beans, salad and dessert.

July 4 Picnic

American Legion Post 7 in Chapala is celebrating U.S. Independence day on Saturday, July 4 with an old-time picnic lunch. The holiday menu includes fried chicken, corn on the cob, potato salad and dessert for 130 pesos.

Picnickers will start arriving about 1 p.m. and lunch will be served at 2 p.m.

Summer Spanish Classes

The summer session of Spanish language classes for adults at lakeside begin on Monday July 6 at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS). The classes, which are for LCS members, meet twice a week at the Wilkes Educational Center in Ajijic through Thursday, August 20.

The LCS Spanish program uses the Warren Hardy Spanish-language course designed for adult student. Several levels of instruction are available as students progress in the program. Registration is now underway for the upcoming classes in the LCS office.

Tuition for the course is 750 pesos, the course textbook is an additional 430 pesos and the other instructional materials can be purchased separately. Visit the LCS website at lakechapalasociety.com for more information about the Spanish classes and about LCS membership, 

Introduction to Spanish

The next round of Introduction to Spanish Classes for LCS members will begin on Tuesday, July 7 at the LCS campus from noon until 1:30 p.m.

This casual class offered for beginners covers the Spanish alphabet, simple vocabulary words and phrases to use about town for shopping as well as a variety of other useful information about the area and Mexican culture.

Classes are held on the first three Tuesdays of each month. Learning materials are provided for this class which has a tuition fee of 175 pesos.

Students can sign up in the LCS office during regular office hours on Mondays through Saturdays.

Note: The program manager will be available to answer questions about either of these courses on Monday, June 29, Thursday, July 2 and Friday, July 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the blue umbrella patio at the LCS Campus.

New car

Last week Enrique Gonzalez Rovirosa of FreshSalads, a chain of 18 Guadalajara restaurants, presented a new Hyundai Sedan to the nuns of Villa Infantil, the orphanage near San Luis Soyatlan. With the rising cost of gas and repairs, the three nuns have wished for a small car to use for errands in Jocotepec or Ajijic. They were so excited that they each, in turn, drove the white car to the gate and back.

Lakeside Presbyterian

During the Sunday, June 21 10 a.m. worship service at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Pastor Ross Arnold will continue his sermon series on the teachings of Jesus with, “If You Love Me – Be Thankful.”

Arnold says, “The great Christian author, G. K. Chesterton, once wrote, ‘When it comes to life, the critical thing is whether you take things for granted, or take them with gratitude.’ As we consider the words of Jesus and the early Christians about gratitude, we gain a renewed understanding of how and why Christians should be thankful for all things.”

The Pastor’s Forum follows worship, refreshments and fellowship. At this informal 11:30 a.m. session, attendees are free to ask the Pastor questions about the morning’s sermon, the church, the faith, or any other topic of interest.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

The innocent suffering of Job, and the reason for suffering in general, is the background for Fr. Winston Welty’s sermon at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church during the Sunday, June 21, 10 a.m. worship service.  “A Shouting Match with God” reflects on Job’s anger and impatience, and the universal human desire to understand the mind of God in the face of undeserved suffering. A garden coffee and fellowship hour follows the worship service.

The children’s bilingual Sunday School program begins at 9:45 a.m. Every Sunday, the feeding program supported by St. Andrew’s welcomes donations of non-perishable food items which can left in the baskets by the church doors.

The men of the parish meet for lunch on Wednesday, June 24, noon at CosinArt Restaurant in Ajijic.

During the Sunday, June 14 service at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar, the Rt. Reverend Lino Rodriguez Amaro, Bishop of the Western Diocese of the Anglican Church of Mexico, baptized five children, confirmed five children and two adults, and received eight into the Anglican Communion. Shown above are, from left: Rodriguez Amaro, and Heather Stevenson and Doreen Cox, who were both confirmed. The bishop said he was extremely pleased to encounter the open, welcoming community of faith at St. Andrew’s.

The Little Chapel

The interdenominational congregation of the Little Chapel by the Lake will meet for a shared time of fellowship and refreshments with the congregation of Christ Church Lakeside at about 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 21. Then at 11:15 a.m., the members of the Little Chapel will gather in the sanctuary for their weekly Sunday worship service.

Pastor Gene Raymer will honor fathers by discussing some of the qualities that made Abraham a good father.

After the service, members of the congregation will continue their fellowship and discussions at a local restaurant over lunch.

There will be another in the discussion series “Experiencing God,” based on the book by Henry Blackaby and Claude King, on Tuesday June 23, 7 p.m. A short video and discussion will be featured.

San Andrés English

Fr. Basil G. Royston, D.Min will celebrate English Mass on Sunday, June 21, 9 a.m. in San Andrés, the parish church of Ajijic. This week, on Father’s Day, he will also commemorate and honor the fathers of the congregation and the Fathers of the Church.

On the international liturgical calendar, this 13th week of ordinary time is set aside as “The Lord of The Storm.” Royston says, “Just to know that Christ is with us amid all the turbulence of life is a great cause for celebration and thanksgiving.  With Christ the turbulence can become the birth bangs of a new creation.”

Christ Church

Christ Church Lakeside will celebrate Holy Communion from Presanctified Elements on Sunday June 21, 9:30 a.m. in the Little Chapel by the Lake. Deacon Rob Wells will preside and Warden Jim Powers will give the message based on Mark 4:35-41, with the theme, “Fear Not!”

Unitarian Universalist

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets Sunday June 21, 10:30 a.m. at Plaza de la Ribera, Rio Bravo 10A  when Susan Miller will present “The Four Agreements and Fathers.”

This program is a humorous look at Don Miguel Ruiz’s book “The Four Agreements” as it might apply to fathers – four- legged, two-legged and finned. A coffee hour will follow.

Unitarian Universalists search for truth along many paths. They gather around common moral values that include the inherent worth and dignity of every person.

Open Circle

Participants of Open Circle will gather on Sunday, June 21, 10 a.m. for a social and refreshment time before a musical presentation begins at 10:30 a.m.

RCM Piano Quintet, an award-winning ensemble of young musicians from Guadalajara, will perform classics by Latin American composers. They will conclude with the riveting “Libertango” of Astor Piazzola – the piece they used when they auditioned for (and won) a slot in a prestigious competition scheduled for the summer 2016  in Milan.

In August, the musicians will perform in the Festival de Santiago de Queretaro. Members of the ensemble are Alberto de Loza II, violin; Diana Laguna, violin; Liliana Laguna, piano; Eduardo Perez, viola; Omar Garcia, cello and Giovanni Cappelletti, percussion.

Buddhist Community

The Heart of Awareness Community meets on Wednesday, June 24. Noble Silence begins at 4 p.m., followed by a formal meditation, dharma teachings and discussion at 4:30. The teaching will be a pre-recorded talk by Tara Brach on “Embracing Our Inner Life.”

The sangha is located at Guadalupe Victoria 101, suites A-B, in Ajijic. The Heart of Awareness is a non-sectarian community grounded in the teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Theravada/Vipassana tradition.
