LCS fashion show

Designs by Alma Gutierrez will be on display at a fashion show to be held at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) on Saturday, May 28, 12:30 p.m. Lunch will be catered by Roberto´s Restaurant with a cash bar.

Surprise raffles and the exhibition and sale of pieces by the LCS Children’s Art Program are also planned. Tickets at LCS and Diane Pearl are 200 pesos.

Open Circle

“Senior Care Models in Mexico” will be presented by Wendy Jane Carrel at the Sunday, May 29, 10:30 a.m. meeting of Open Circle, in the Lake Chapala Society garden.

Carrel, a Spanish-speaking senior care specialist, will review continuing care options in Jalisco and Mexico, describing current models and what one might expect.

She has researched senior health care, housing, and hospice in Chile, Ecuador, and Mexico for four years. In California she served as an administrator in assisted living (including Alzheimer’s care), senior head of information and outreach for Riverside County Office on Aging, senior center director for the City of Coachella, and as a nonprofit communications and grants officer. She has been a hospice volunteer since 1999. She negotiates Ecuadorian and Mexican health systems for clients and serves as an advisor and liaison for senior care, end-of-life care, and disposition of remains. She is presently assisting with the implementation of a palliative care-hospice model for Mexico created by Juntos Contra el Dolor.

Genealogy Forum 

The Genealogy Forum will hold its next meeting on Monday, May 30, 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Riberas del Pilar, located diagonally across the Carretera from Mom’s Deli. 

The meeting will review Legacy, Family Tree Maker and Roots Magic genealogy programs, their advantages and disadvantages, and why genealogy software is important for your research. The forum is open to anyone interested in their family history.

Memorial Day pig roast

American Legion Post Seven in Chapala will host a Memorial Day dinner Monday, May 30, with a social hour beginning at 1 p.m. and dinner at 2 p.m. 

The menu features pit-roasted pig, corn on the cob, homemade baked beans and bananas Foster. Noe and the Men in Black will provide the music. Tickets are 160 pesos, available at the Legion.

Buddhists

The Heart of Awareness Buddhist Sangha meets weekly on Wednesdays. Noble Silence begins at 4 p.m., followed at 4:30 p.m. by a formal meditation period, dharma teachings and discussion. June 1, the teaching will be the first of a video series on “The Four Nourishments of Life:  Edible Foods, Sense Impressions, Volition, and Consciousness,” presented by Brother Phap Hai, a senior monastic disciple of Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh.

The Center is open for hour-long silent meditation periods on Sunday and Monday, May 29 and 30 from 9 to 10 a.m., and Thursday, June 2, from 11 a.m. to noon.  A “Drop-In” Practice/Study group meets every Friday from 2 to 4 p.m.  All are welcome.

A yoga class suitable for all levels of experience is offered at Heart of Awareness on Wednesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. A donation of 50 pesos is requested for the class.

The Heart of Awareness is a non-sectarian community grounded in the teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Theravada/Vipassana tradition. Prior experience or affiliation is not required. Lakeside British Society

Cameron Peters from Operacion Amor will be the speaker at the next Lakeside British Society luncheon, Saturday, June 4, 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant in Ajijic. 

Humane organizations agree that dog/cat sterilization is the only solution to animal overpopulation and the neglect, abuse and health issues it causes.

Menu choices for the luncheon include minestrone soup or green salad, steak pie, gravy or breaded parmesan chicken (both served with French fries and vegetables) or fettucini primavera. Dessert is berries with ice cream.

More Red Cross fetes

Community support to sustain Cruz Roja Chapala continues through the series of limited-seating Food Giver fundraisers that are being held at private homes. Jan Lustig has signed to throw a cocktail party scheduled for Monday, June 6, 6 p.m. A sit-down dinner will be hosted by Irma Hernández and Pepe Barajas on Saturday, June 18, 6 p.m. For tickets and event addresses stop by Yoly’s Unisex Salon, Plaza Bugambilias, or call 766-2260. 

LCS Bus Trips

The Lake Chapala Society is heading to the San Pedro Tlaquepaque crafts center, and the Forum Mall on Wednesday, June 8.

Tlaquepaque boasts upscale arts and crafts and fine dining in an architecturally significant pedestrian-only zone.  For those who wish to shop at the Forum Mall and the Home Depot store, accommodations will be made. This trip is limited to 20 people. The bus departs promptly 9 a.m. from the sculpture in La Floresta.

The trip on Wednesday, June 22 is to Guadalajara’s Galerias Mall. Major retailers are Best Buy, Liverpool and Sears, while dining options include Cheesecake Factory, PF Chang, Applebee’s and more. Costco, Sams and Super Walmart are adjacent.  The bus departs 9:30 a.m. from the sculpture in La Floresta.

Cost for either trip is 300 pesos for LCS members and 350 pesos for non-members.

Operation Compassion

Following a presentation given May 23 in the Jocotepec municipal offices, Operation Compassion received a letter from Mayor Hector Manuel Haro Perez, stating his support for clinics to be held in small villages within the municipality. 

The meeting was facilitated by Veterinarian Ailing Aparicio and Suly Salcedo and attended by eight Operation Compassion supporters, including Dee Mistrik, the head of the volunteer group. 

The first village selected to have a spay and neutering clinic was El Molino, located on the western outskirts of the municipality. The clinic will most likely be held in the last part of June.

Lakeside Singers

The Lakeside Singers will present a sing-a-long Wednesday, June 15, 4:30 p.m. at Casa Nostra retirement home, located at Santa Margarita 8 in Riberas del Pilar. Afterward, at about 6 p.m., the group will dine together at Pizzeria Toscana, Hidalgo 75 (on the Carretera) in Riberas del Pilar.

On Wednesday, June 29, the Singers head to La Paloma. Dinner will be at 6 p.m. at la Mision, Rio Bravo 7, Ajijic.

For those in need of a lift, Belva Velazquez will be at the Little Chapel by the Lake between 4 and 4:10 p.m. on both days.

Anyone who is able to (or at least can try to) carry a tune is welcome to join the Lakeside Singers as they lift up some hearts in the area’s rest homes.

Spanish classes

The Lake Chapala Society has announced its next round of Introduction to Spanish language classes for its members. This is a casual class offered for the beginner that covers the Spanish alphabet, simple vocabulary and phrases to use about town for shopping, and other useful information about the area and Mexican culture. 

Classes are held each month starting the first Tuesday of the month and continue for three weeks. June classes start on Tuesday, June 7, and will be held at the LCS campus from noon until 1:30 p.m. Learning materials are provided, and the tuition for the classes is 175 pesos. Sign up is available at the LCS office during regular office hours, Monday through Saturday.
