Puerto Vallarta Bulletin - March 1, 2014

The 5th Annual Punta Sayulita Classic is taking place from March 7 to 9 in Sayulita, Nayarit, just about 40 minutes north of downtown Puerto Vallarta.

This event has continued to gain popularity and has become one of the premier international surfing and stand-up paddle (SUP) events in North America. It attracts thousands of spectators and around 100 competitors. The line-up includes defending champions Zane Schweitzer, Tony Silvagni, Fernando Stalla, Ryan Helm, Vanina Walsh and Chloe Calmon. The event’s director is pleased to have some of the best compete.

The event kicks off on Friday, March 7, 10 a.m. with a beach clean-up, followed by a surfing and SUP clinic for kids at noon. On Saturday and Sunday it’s all about boards and bodies taking to the water from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. There is no charge to hang out on the beach all day and catch the action.

The unusual thing about this event is that they are not competing for prize money but raising awareness for environmental protection and respect for the world’s oceans and wildlife as well as to raise funds for the Reef Check Foundation’s area Eco-Diver Program and the Punta Sayulita Foundation, which has children’s educational and sports development programs.

Reading, writing & a ball

It is the premier fundraiser in Puerto Vallarta, the glamorous Becas Ball.  This annual event will be held on the Patio Los Arcos at Club Regina in Marina Vallarta, on Saturday, March 8, starting at 6 p.m. and winding down by 12:30 a.m. The event is held on the property of the Westin Resort & Spa  (Marina Sur 205).

You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Organizers have suggested everyone dress in pink, black and gold.

Thierry Blouet from Café des Artistes has developed the four-course meal. The menu includes Light Pea Cream Soup with Brussel Sprouts au Champagne, Super Marinated Salmon Blinis, Coq au Vin, Passion Fruit Sorbet with Berry Sauce, Hazelnuts Mille Feuille and Petit Fours.

The musical group Odisea from Ciudad Guzman will be the entertainment. There will be room to dance and the group puts on a dazzling show.

Everyone will receive an attendance gift. There will be door prizes and a silent auction.

Becas Vallarta is the oldest non-profit in the area and has been operating for over 50 years. This   Mexican foundation administers over 400 scholarships for students in Puerto Vallarta. These students have great ability but limited economic resources. Scholarships start during the second year of junior high and run through senior high and even university.

Many Becas students come from single parent homes, homes with five, six or more children or homes where the breadwinner makes only enough to provide the very basics of life. Those circumstances make it impossible for the children, no matter how bright and eager to learn, to continue their education past the mandated junior high. That is where Becas Vallarta assists.

Creative energy

Be prepared to be dazzled at the 2nd Emergente Alternative Art Expo at Los Mangos Library (Francisco Villa 1001) on Saturday, March 15, starting at 7:30 p.m. and running until 10 p.m. This event is free.

The show features up-and-coming artists who express themselves through paintings, art prints, sculptures, photography, short films, and digital mapping. You can wander through the grounds and buildings checking out the extraordinary works.

Emergente is a global art show of this generation’s highly connected creators who have started to participate in international exchanges and contests with excellent results. Jalisco’s Víctor Orozco has won many awards, including the “Best Short Film” at the Slam Zeise Kinos in Hamburg and Germany’s “First Steps” prize in 2013.

In the second edition of Emergente, Orozco will be joined by “La Raya” Graphic Arts Workshop and Megáfono Editorial, among others. Antonio de los Ríos will add music to poems by local writer Raúl Gibrán. Phonofilia, AgaveZzounds and Diego Cont will also give performances.

This party for the senses gives everyone an opportunity to meet people and see art that touches, affects and widens our visions.
