Adelita’s: destination dining on a quiet San Antonio street

Adelita’s Bar & Grill, tucked away in the historic part of San Antonio Tlayacapan, offers great ambiance and some of the best dining experiences in the area.

Adelita’s prides itself in serving delicious grilled food and is best known for its barbecued pork ribs, a house specialty. They are skillfully prepared by chef Areceli Lopez, and generously served with notable succulence and plenty of smokiness. On Tuesday’s starting at noon, you can order them either for a full rack for 145  pesos (instead of the normal 199) or 89 pesos for a half rack instead of 139 pesos during the rest of the week.

On July 4 last year, the restaurant reopened with many renovations, and the name changed from Café Adelita – its title for the previous seven years.  It is a large and attractively decorated restaurant with a bar and garden area that overlooks an ancient church. Manager Arturo Castellanos and floor manager Heidi Olivera are very professional and work well as a team.

Adelita’s offers much more than great ribs. The menu is extensive, as are the talents of chef Lopez, a master at presentation and the use of fresh ingredients.

For lunch, try the baguettes done eight different ways, served with your choice of salad, fries, coleslaw or soup. My husband had the pulled pork in a smoky BBQ sauce, which he raved about. I had the Greek salad served with grilled shrimp that was absolutely delicious. There are Italian, Greek, pepperoni or meat pizzas (also served at dinner) and tasty classics such as fish tacos, southwest quesadillas or fish and chips.

For dinner, I would recommend the butterflied coconut shrimp or the Louisiana crab cakes as good starters … both were great. Salad offerings are: Greek, Caesar, spinach or – more substantially – the mango shrimp or Cobb. Classic choices include the Greek wrap or hamburger and fries for 90 pesos, and you can add toppings of cheese, bacon, sautéed onions and mushrooms for a few pesos more.

There are many promotions and events that highlight the calendar each week.

Monday: live music starting at 7 p.m. from rock ’n roll group “Jamm Band”, plus eight reduced price dinner options. Tuesday: the famous BBQ ribs are the main attraction. Wednesday, the same entrees available on Monday evenings are again offered at a reduced price. Thursday: Adelita’s regular Italian menu at 30-percent off and discounts for margaritas and chicken wings. Friday:  live modern rock music in English and Spanish. Saturday: live salsa and Latin music.

Adelita Bar & Grill is open seven days a week from noon. Mondays until 10 p.m., Tuesdays through Thursdays until 9 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays until midnight. Sundays are quiet with sports on TV in the bar and dining until 8 p.m.
