Jalisco hopes to administer 3 million flu vaccines this season

A record number of flu vaccines will be made available to residents of Jalisco this fall and winter, Public Health Director Hector Ramirez Cordero announced Thursday.

As many as 1.2 million doses will be distributed to clinics of the Instituto Mexicano de Seguro Social (IMSS), and the same number made available to facilities of the Jalisco Secretaría de Salud. The shots are administered free of charge in both institutions.  Ramirez hopes the number can be increased to three million as the season progresses.

The first batch of vaccines is scheduled to arrive in Jalisco on October 10.  Ramirez said the most vulnerable groups – children younger than five, but especially children less than two years old, adults 65 years of age and older and pregnant women – are advised to get shots as early as possible.

Lake Chapala area residents will be able to get flu shots at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Health Fair on October 8 and 9. See page 12 for further details.
