Job fair brings opportunities for Chapala’s unemployed

A large crowd of men and women congregated at the Chapala plaza Friday, April 15 seeking interviews with more than a dozen private businesses and government agencies participating in the municipality’s Primera Jornada Laboral (job fair).

The event was jointly organized by the National Employment Service, the Jalisco Labor Ministry and the local government’s offices of economic promotion and employment. It was designed to fill as many as 450 positions available to laborers and professionals in different fields. The gamut of available jobs from ranged basic work gigs as restaurants cooks and waiters, sales agents and drivers to well-paid posts for titled engineers, nurses, doctors, psychologists, social workers, teachers and accountants. Most of the employers do business in the Chapala-Guadalajara corridor.

Cesar Covarrubias, Chapala’s economic promotion director, calculates that around 3,800 of the municipality’s adult citizens are currently unemployed and another 2,000 make a living through informal commerce. He indicates that the municipal seat suffers the highest unemployment rate.

The city’s employment office, originated under the current administration, keeps up a listing of enterprises that register job openings along with roster of persons seeking work opportunities. Job applications may be filed Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the module located in the patio outside the City Hall lobby.
