Marley Jane (Janie) Salyer Harbin

Lakeside resident Marley Jane (Janie) Salyer Harbin died February 15 after a short illness, exactly six months after the death of her husband.

Harbin was born in Gorman, Texas on November 4, 1947 to Troy and Mary Lou Salyer. She lived many places as a child but graduated from high school in Stephenville, Texas and attended Tarlton State University (TSU).

While at Stephenville High School, Janie met the love of her life – Dale (Butch) Harbin. They were married in December 1964 in the First United Methodist Church of Stephenville.

Janie Harbin worked at TSU for several years but would later find her passion as a travel agent. The couple eventually moved to Port Aransas, Texas, where she continued her career. She later took a job with the South Jetty Newspaper in display advertising/production/classified ads/circulation.

Janie and Butch’s passion for traveling took them to Mexico numerous times. After they decided to buy a home in Chapala, she became active in the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 7, serving as president for two terms. They attended the Lake Chapala Baptist Church.

The couple also had a home in Jasper, Texas next to their daughter Shelly where they spent many wonderful summers and Christmases.

Harbin is survived by her only child, Shelly Harbin McMillian and son-in-law Tony McMillian of Jasper; sister Janice Salyer Blackwell and husband Tom of Eastland, Texas; brother Larry Salyer and wife Karen of Weatherford, Texas; sister Sharon Johnson of Georgetown, Texas; and sister Tracy Salyer McMillian and husband Wesley of Alexander, Texas. She is also survived by her grandson, Zachary (Zak) Harbin Dowell of Dallas, Texas and two step grandchildren, Ben McMillian of Stephenville and Heather McMillian and her daughter Bella of Dublin, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many loving friends.
