The music of ten mariachi bands filled the patio of the Jalisco Congress this week as legislators gave their approval to naming November 27 as Dia del Mariachi (Mariachi Day) in the state.
The date was chosen because on this day in 2011, the United Nations designated mariachi to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage sites.
Mayors from all of the state’s 126 municipalities have been asked to come up with suggestions on how to celebrate the day.
