2nd case of Zika reported in Jalisco

The Jalisco Health Department (SSJ) Wednesday confirmed a second case of the Zika virus in the state.

The patient is a 31-year-old male from Zapopan who first displayed symptoms on February 2, the SSJ revealed.  He had recently returned to Jalisco from the neighboring state of Michoacan and is reported to be in stable health.

The news came a week after the SSJ announced additional measures to fight the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue, chikungunya and Zika,

A renewed fumigation operation will target areas considered to be at risk in the Guadalajara metropolitan area.

Last month, the World Health Organization declared a “public health emergency of international concern” due to the suspected link of the Zika virus to a surge in serious birth defects in South America.

Mexico’s federal health authority (SSA) has confirmed 121 cases of the Zika virus in the country, with most cases identified in the southern Mexican states of Chiapas and Oaxaca.
