Modified Salon de Octubre offers prizes for ‘established’ and ’young’ artists

Despite being mired in controversy last year, the annual Salon de Octubre art competition and exhibit is going ahead this year under the watchful eye of new administrators.

The judging and selection process was heavily criticized by local artists last year, prompting several to intervene and remove their works from the show.

The Jalisco Culture Secretariat has wrested control of this year’s event from the Fiestas de Octubre organizing committee, which had previously run the Salon in conjunction with its annual state fair.

Respected state cultural officials have been brought on board and the three-member judging panel will include well-known local and out-of-state artists.

This year’s contest will feature two categories – one for established artists who have “a trajectory” and another for “young creators.”  Prize money will be 80,000 and 40,000 pesos respectively.

The Salon de Octubre is open to all artists, national or foreign, who were either born in Jalisco or have lived in the state for at least five years.

The accepted entries will be exhibited during October at the Ex Convento del Carmen in Guadalajara.
