Thursday dance

Instead of politicians arguing, enjoy free recitals in Guadalajara city hall’s council chamber.

Mariachi Festival Galas

Six flagship gala mariachi concerts are scheduled in the majestic  Degollado during the 22nd International Mariachi and Charreria Festival. They feature the biggest names in the mariachi genre, including Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, Mariachi de América de Don Jesús Rodríguez de Hijar, Mariachi los Camperos de Nati Cano and Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlan.  Most of these performances also include a full orchestral accompaniment.

Folk dance

The renowned Ballet Folklorico de la Universidad de Guadalajara summer/fall season continues through October 11. This troupe’s repertoire takes in dances from the states of Veracruz, Michoacan, Guerrero and, of course, Jalisco, with its breathtaking “La Negra,” “La Culebra” and “Jarabe Tapatio” finales.

Tokio Hotel

German pop-rock/alternative rock band, founded in 2001 have released three number one albums in their native country and sold more than 10 million CDs worldwide.

Dan Nimmer Trio

U.S. jazz pianist and composer Dan Nimmer is joined by bassist David Wong and drummer Rodney Green for the next concert in the excellent Jazz at Lincoln Center series sponsored by the University of Guadalajara. Nimmer studied jazz at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music from the age of 15 and moved to New York in 2004. In the following year, he joined the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. He also became pianist in a variety of bands led by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. His second recording as leader was Kelly Blue, a tribute to pianist Wynton Kelly.

More folk dance

Guadalajara city hall’s Ballet Folclorico Guadalajara continues its summer series. The theme of their season is “Cielito Lindo.”

Ballet

Famous Russian State Ballet Mari El presents “Carmen” and Ravel’s “Bolero.”  Formed 45 years ago, the troupe is part of Opera and Ballet Sapaev, one of the oldest and most important theaters in Russia. Its young cast exudes professionalism, impeccable technique and high artistic level.  Frequently invited to Mexico, Mari El has been nominated three times for the prestigious Lunas del Auditorio award for the best live ballet performance of the year.

Recital

In the University of Guadalajara’s elegant Paraninfo (former rectory), the Orquesta Higinio Ruvalcaba, directed by Konstantin Zumbilov, and invited Russian soloists – Arthur Kaganowksky (violin), Eszter Svilvester (viola) and Alla Millchtein (piano) – interpret baroque music, both European and Mexican.

Classic Rock

The third Festival of Classic Rock features Manuel Orozco Rock, La Revolución de Emiliano Zapata and The Rockets (a Beatles tribute band).

Joven Ballet de Jalisco

This state’s only professional dance troupe presents “Easy Winners,” featuring choreography to the music of Scott Joplin, as well as the songs of Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, Jacques Brel and others.

Andre Riu

Dutch violinist and conductor best known for creating the waltz-playing Johann Strauss Orchestra. Together they have turned classical and waltz music into a worldwide concert touring act, as successful as some of the biggest global pop and rock music acts.
