Tuesday recitals
The free classical music series Martes de Musica y Opera will move house during September from the Degollado Theater to the Teatro Alarife Martin Casillas. The concept remains the same: no tickets are sold nor is there numbered seating. Just turn up before the performance and grab a seat.
The quality is always exceptional, and the theater will often fill up.
September 8: Soprano Aura Gonzalez and guitarist Ricardo Salinas perform special arrangements of works by Mozart, Paisiello, Giuliani, Rossini, Schubert and others. September 22: Four female sopranos and mezzo-sopranos team up for “Canto entre mujeres” – Celia Gómez Bernal, Carmen García Chavarín, Lila Gutiérrez Martínez and Margarita Botello Flores. The program includes an eclectic mix of classical and popular pieces, such as Bernstien’s “America,” Lloyd-Weber’s “Memory,” Greever’s “Alma Mia,” and Loewe’s “I Could Have Danced All Night.”
September 29: the Orquesta Típica de Guadalajara directed by Ramón Becerra interprets polkas and waltzes, including Strauss’ “The Blue Danube.”

Thursday dance
Free dance presentations by accomplished groups are held each Thursday. Being a patriotic month, September is given over to folk dance.

Instead of politicians arguing, enjoy free recitals in Guadalajara city hall’s council chamber.

Folk dance
The renowned Ballet Folklorico de la Universidad de Guadalajara continues its summer/fall season. This troupe’s repertoire takes in dances from the states of Veracruz, Michoacan, Guerrero and, of course, Jalisco, with its breathtaking “La Negra,” “La Culebra” and “Jarabe Tapatio” finales.

Jalisco Canta
The third Festival Internacional de Música Vocal Jalisco Canta, featuring talented a cappella groups, duets and solo performers from both Mexico and abroad, has scheduled 13 recitals in Guadalajara, as well as shows in Chapala, Tepatitlan, Lagos de Moreno, Acatlan de Juarez, Mazamitla and Tapalpa. Memorias del Viento (Memories of the Wind) is a contemporary choreography production that seeks to blur the distinct lines between movement and sound.

Russian Ballet
Famous Russian State Ballet Mari El presents “Carmen” and Ravel’s “Bolero.” Formed 45 years ago, the troupe is part of Opera and Ballet Sapaev, one of the oldest and most important theaters in Russia. Its young cast exudes professionalism, impeccable technique and high artistic level. Frequently invited to Mexico, Mari El has been nominated three times for the prestigious Lunas del Auditorio award for the best live ballet performance of the year.

Recital
In the University of Guadalajara’s elegant Paraninfo (former rectory), the Orquesta Higinio Ruvalcaba, directed by Konstantin Zumbilov, and invited Russian soloists – Arthur Kaganowksky (violin), Eszter Svilvester (viola) and Alla Millchtein (piano) – interpret baroque music, both European and Mexican.

Diego Urcola Quintet
The Diego Urcola Quintet will feature in the next concert in the excellent Jazz at Lincoln Center series sponsored by the University of Guadalajara. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, three‑time Grammy nominee Diego Urcola has been a member of the Paquito D’Rivera Quintet since 1991. Additionally, the oft‑in‑demand trumpeter performs regularly with the legendary saxophonist Jimmy Heath, the Caribbean Jazz Project and the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All‑Star Big Band.
